Re: Cold Steel Talk
I bought a Recon 1 XL about 6 years ago and toyed with the idea of adding an opening hole because I dislike thumb studs, but ended up gifting it to a friend who loves knives. It was larger than I really wanted to carry and I realized I’d never use it, but it was a good knife. Are the current Cold St...

Re: SE performance is more than simply teeth vs no teeth.
Sharpening a Spyderedge on the Sharpmaker will gradually round the points. What I have observed after reprofiling a bunch of SE knives to 15 degrees is that the degree of rounding is highly dependent upon the type of steel. My H-1, LC200N, and VG-10 blades rounded much more on their journey to 15 de...

Re: S110v to delicate more of a safe queen???
I used a Manix LW in S110V as my primary work knife for several years at the tail end of my construction career. It worked very well, never taking critical damage in that time. I kept it keen at 15 dps on the brown SM rods.

They are cool, but I don’t need one personally. For those who actually rescue entangled whales, this tool is a godsend.

Re: Sharpmaker Elite Edition
A fully-articulated base to hold either triangular or cat’s-eye rods at different angles and orientations would be a wonderful product, but so niche as to be a lot business decision. Adding adjustability adds cost, complexity, and potential confusion. In my own experience I have found that rods wigg...

Re: Vote: Kick? Choil? Forward? Other?
I voted for forward because I prefer a full handle grip to a finger choil grip. However, many knives I really like have either a kick or a choil. To wit: Delica Endela Endura, Stretch Paramilitary 2 Manix. Choils make sense on little knives, but I seldom carry anything smaller than a Delica.

Re: Delica 4 in 2024?
I keep coming back to the Delica. I have other knives in that size class (Watu and Sage among them), but there is something about the Delica that makes it special. I do wish for silver clips instead of the black painted clips. Acetone, cloth, and elbow grease reveals a nice almost stone washed fini...

Re: A Deeper Investigation into Spyderco Diamond vs cBN: Which is better?! Why!?
I have reprofiled a bunch of SE Spyderco knives from 20 to 15 on my Sharpmaker CBN rods (Endela and Endura in VG-10, Caribbean in LC200N, Pacific Salt in H1, and most recently an Endura in K390. That last one took the longest.) I’m amazed at how well the rod corners have lasted after~12 hours of con...

Re: Spyderco backlocks : why is the stop pin an exception, instead of being the norm ?
...Getting the pin to bottom out at the same time as the lock drops looks like a whole 'nother level of difficulty. For a prototype, yes. For production though? Some added complexity, yes, but enough to price it out of reach? Note that the Triad lock has the same issue: the stop pin must hit the bl...

Re: Janky grind on K390 Delica Wharncliffe
One way to break knife buyers into two categories is this: those who are comfortable sharpening their knives and those who aren’t. Another way is this: those who use knives and primarily value function versus those who admire knives and primarily value features/appearance. As Sal says, “All good, ju...

I look forward to the Delica and Endura serrated VG-10 models moving to FFG like the Endela. I don’t know why that hasn’t happened yet, but hope it happens in the future.

Re: Put a Spydie hole in it
Hey Al, Actually, sharpening is going to be a group effort as to what will be the best way to get the best edge. I'm betting that this group will provide a good edge-u-cation on how to get this beast sharp. We're using diamond belts at the factory and it's a real PITA. At home, I've been using the ...

Re: Sharpmaker Elite Edition
I voted yes. I’ve toyed at times with the idea of making my own adjustable base for the SM rods, but it just doesn’t matter enough to make the effort. I can freehand sharpen pretty well, and bought a Galley Vee for the 10 dps geometry.

Re: Delica 4 in 2024?
Fun fact, if you clean your VG-10 Delica 4 blade and angle it in the light just right. You can see the chromium carbide banding flowing parallel with the blade. https://i.imgur.com/33JOrDg.jpeg I always wondered what caused that shimmer in VG-10. Thank you! I add my hearty voice to the chorus prais...

Re: What Spyderco Knife Has Surprised You the Most and Why
For me it was the Endela. It’s everything I love about the Delica lightweight in a slightly bigger package. The ergonomics are great and the FFG SE blade came with the best Spyderedge I’ve ever owned. VG-10 works great in thin SE. In fact, the Endela hits the sweet spot I saw in the original Mantra ...

Re: Does anyone know how to cut brown Sharpmaker rods cleanly?
Diamond-bladed tile or rock saw will cleanly cut Sharpmaker rods. Feed slowly with water coolant. Thank you Bill - that is very helpful. I believe we have a mitre-type tile saw with coolant feed in the workshop. Roughly what RPMs do I want to be spinning it at? I’m guessing just enough to cut witho...

Re: Getting Full Value from Your Blade Length
Excuse my ignorance, but what the heck is a sharpening choil? I know where the choil is on a knife. And I am aware of a finger choil, usually with jimping. But when ya'll are referencing a sharpening choil, are you specifying the blunt choil section between the sharp edge and the handle? And if so,...
