Re: Spyderco Amalgam CQI

Hey Zatx! Good looking mods! Nice job contouring the scale around the lockbar cutout. I imagine it makes lockbar access really easy. How are the ergos of the handle in use with the expanded lock cutout? The stonewashing looks quite good from what I can see. Got any pics of that stonewash finish in d...

Re: Let's get hyped for the Amalgam!

Thanks Reference_Sensor! Definitely let me know how you like it when you get it in hand, and keep us posted on how it holds up in your work =). I'm curious how the bearing pivot will do with dust and sand.

Re: My new Manix 2!

I love the Manix. It is such a great design. I got the standard G10 version, the lightweight, the CPM154/S90V sprint, and the backlock. I think it's the knife model I have the most variants of in my collection because I like it so much. The ergonomics on the handle are fantastic, and IMO even more s...

Re: Second Time Around Possibilities?

I think there were still some of the second issue Starmates available new when I got into knives and learned about Spyderco, but then I kept reading about unfavorable comparisons of the second issue Starmates qualitywise vs the original Starmates, so I never got one. Kind of regret it because I like...

Re: Kid who is a knife nerd

No worries, my first knives weren't Spyderco either but I've gravitated to the brand and nearly all of my recent acquisitions have been Spyderco (not intentionally, but I think that just speaks to how good the company and its products are). What knives do you currently have?

Re: Kid who is a knife nerd

Welcome Jeremy and Fran! I think it's great that you're into knives and are learning to care for and maintain them responsibly at your age. You have great taste in knives and knife companies :) . What knives do you have so far?

Re: Kapara, strong compression lock

Could be that the compression lock spring is stiffer and applying more pressure on the tang?

Re: Kapara, strong compression lock

I think the pivots are just tighter on the Taichung models. Handled a Caribbean and it also would not "drop shut". I think something to keep in mind is that aside from just the compression lock, the Paramilitary 2 has a bushing pivot which contributes to limiting pivot tightness and making...

Re: Let's get hyped for the Amalgam!

I'm agree that the sweet spot is a nice lightswitchable flipper. My tendency to pushbutton flippers when possible was really to make up for shortcomings, whether it was an overly light detent or stiff pivot or too light of a blade. A flipper had to have pretty bad action for me to need a wrist flick...

Re: Hard truths and observations

That is a really good question just how would you test a knife to make sure the steel is what is advertised? I mean with Spyderco I own enough different models and different steels even in the same model family that it is readily apparent they are not the same steel. The only way I could tell is by...

Re: Let's get hyped for the Amalgam!

I dunno, if the Spydiegods wanted it to look that way....... My God gave me free will (and salvation), so I’m free to tinker with the design and manufacture of my knife. Besides, Brian (the designer) suggested it. :) To be fair and give credit where credit's due, the suggestion to open up the lock ...

Re: Let's get hyped for the Amalgam!

Looks pretty well done! If you take it a little further back, it'll have great symmetry with the index finger groove :D

Edit: didnt see your reply, spyderg. You've got strong fingers! I gave it a try and wasn't able to make it happen. Got a video or anything? :D

Re: Let's get hyped for the Amalgam!

2. I could see that, but might instead propose widening the lock tab itself; taking a look at other compression lock knives like the Sliverax, the tab extends more towards the back of the cutout to give more real estate for the finger to press on for closing. I don't have any pictures of it yet, bu...
