Re: Why no DLC on more carbon steel knives?

I believe it was Aaron Gough on Youtube that did a thorough test of coatings on blades and was finding in many cases the coating was making the corrosion much worse than it was on uncoated blades exactly the same. I believe this is the video, but I didn't review it today: https://youtu.be/s6cKjbDTo...

Re: Updated shaman sprint steel poll

I don't like this poll. You have 7 tool steels and only 3 stainless options. Of the stainless options, two are specialty nitrogen steels, and only one is a conventional steel. I went with Vanax because it's supposed to be the toughest stainless steel on the market. Also, it would be totally differe...

Re: Does Made in America Need to be Expensive?

Couple of things: When you purchase from other countries, your dollar is then exchanged for the going rate and if your dollar is strong - you come out a winner. Part of the reason why Taichung, Taiwan is used is because of that exchange rate. Those employees earn a good living and their quality show...

I don’t remember specifics. Somewhere in the $185 range.
I think the PM2 was around $179, so I’d guess about $10 less for Para 3 (I don’t know if the new Spyderco pricing makes this logic off, though).

Re: I love s30v

I dislike S30V. It's more difficult to sharpen than it should be, doesn't take a great edge, and I find it chips too easily...even after all these years of refinement. 'Budget steels' seem inferior because the heat treat is lousy on them and not because they can't be terrific in EDC use. I found CTS...

Of the steels you’re most familiar with (guessing), 14C28N or AEB-L...except it’s slightly better in most ways but it is not corrosion resistant.

Re: CPM M4 vs K390

Both are good, M4 seems to corrode a bit faster in my use. K390 has only patina'd for me whereas M4, I think, can actually rust. K390 holds an edge better, M4 should be tougher. I find K390 tough enough, in my uses, where I haven't needed or desired more, but I haven't sharpened it enough or done en...

Re: Sebenza v. Sage 2 (Fit and Finish)

They're very different knives IMHO. I've owned several CRK and many more Spyderco knives. Spyderco's knives really don't have bad tolerances that I've noticed, but the finish is better on most CRK knives (which is intentional and part of the cost, Spyderco's more expensive knives match that level of...

Re: CPM Cru-Wear Grey users, please stand up !

I have a few models in Cruwear, but the only one I really use often is the checkered grey Manix 2 which has been my weekend EDC for a while now. Cruwear has held an edge nicely and I've seen some minor chipping in use, but that was on the factory edge which may have had some weakened steel (normal t...

Re: Name a Spyderco knife you thought you would like but REALLY LOVED once you bought it.

There are probably quite a few, but recently, the K390 Urban. Slim, lightweight, and I like this FRN moreso than I thought. The steel holds a good edge. The only downside is the slight sharpness of some parts on the blade besides the edge itself. The Manbug is also a favorite of mine and I didn't kn...

Re: Spyderco Natural G-10 Manix 2 M4 Blade HQ Exclusives

Bout time we see carbon steels offered in DLC. Never understood why S30V and H1 get black blades but carbon steel, which would benefit the most from DLC, doesn't. Sign me up for one. Never did get around to trying M4, and love the XL. I'd like to support sprint runs in the bigger knives :) EDIT: ne...

Re: Sprig or Southfork "Their can be only one"

I would still recommend less expensive items more suitable to the task since it's all at home. The Spyderco kitchen knives are really good options and far less expensive. If you need a cleaver, get the whatever branded Costco one for cheap IMO. As a one size fits all knife, it would depend on how fi...

Re: School me on super blue...

I've never found Super Blue to have surface rust in my uses or in pictures I've seen. It will patina, but that's not harmful to the knife. I don't use anything on my SB knives as far as a coating and they have zero issues here in Michigan. I really don't believe it's a high maintenance steel unless ...

52100 corrodes worse than Super Blue. It will actually rust if you're not careful. Super Blue mostly just patinas, I don't know I've ever seen surface rust on any.

Re: 19c27 anyone?

Yeah I'm pretty sure MBS-26 is really similar. I thought the issue with Sandvik was getting the quantity needed from them, but I could be wrong. I really like 14C28N and their AEB-L variant. I have one French knife using 19C27, I believe, but haven't used it much. It's said they make a quality pure ...
