Re: Caly 3 love?

I own one of every Caly 3 and 3.5 ever produced. It's my favorite spyderco design of all time. Sal is a beast. Its ergo ratios show up in all kinds of places like the Copa and the Kiwi. I recommend them to everyone. The SuperBlue is the best, followed by Hap40 if you ask me. My knife, the Introvert,...

Re: Spyderco Name Recognition?

I'd say most people don't really look too deep into knives - even those who carry knives. Just ask your average carrier what metal is being used in their knife. In-store purchases at malls or retail stores typically probably hover the $5 to $25 range. You see some specialized sporting stores having ...

Re: In praise of Mr. Ed Schempp

Martin is Ed's best work. Aside from Martin, the Rock is the best fixed blade I have ever owned. Further, Ed has been an excellent adviser and mentor in the knife/steel world to me. I'm lucky enough to chat with him roughly once a year, and the things he has taught me have carried over into many are...

There was a time, long ago, when this thread was about Sal's casual bombshells. I miss the old days.

I also have them all, and vastly prefer Hap40. Hap40 is my favorite aside from Aogami. I even have a Hap40 santoku kitchen knife because I liked it so much.

Re: Phoenix rising

The wog is a bit superior IMHO, and this class of knife is basically my favorite. Flipping them is sooooooo buttery smooth, and they are this special class of spyderco that harks back to prehistoric predators mixed with formula cars. This age of BBL was an excellent time to be an AFI. The Wog ended ...

Re: Why do you have the knives you do?

I have a few introverts because I should. I have the rest because I love collecting knives and swords. I have some because I made them. Most of my Spyderco knives are to remind me about lines feeling in the hand different than they look in the catalog. I rarely cut with anything but my modded/beat u...

Re: Dealing With Wimpy Arm Chair Quarterbacks

I work in education, and have a lot of experience with this. From what I can tell, it is a confluence of multiple things. 1. When boys act like boys, we drug them to act like girls because - as some people pointed out - masculinity in all forms is considered toxic in most educational circles. Furthe...

Re: Bram Frank Gunting

I can't imagine having a fallout with Sal or Eric, they are so relaxed and approachable. That said, the MA community tends to be full of large personalities who frequently teach compliance more than they comply. It can make you kind of introverted... I looked to the Gunting a lot when trying to make...

Re: Which sword would be best for modern wars or a modern day fallout scenario?

Very nice! I forged some wire rope damascus a few years back and listened to a mate who reckoned it would harden and I s’pose it did to 45HRC. Ah, hahaha! http://i.imgur.com/DrTgHsT.jpg You have to get that EIPS (extra-improved plow steel). It's 1095, and hardens, as well as takes a hamo...

Re: Which sword would be best for modern wars or a modern day fallout scenario?

Either a smatchet, a barong, or a Howard Clark L-6 Bainite. I'm just finishing up a set of 20" chisakatana - one in 1075 and the other in EIPS wire rope damascus. I tend to find that FMA-sword sized japanese-style swords are the best mix of fun and utility in cutting performance. Sinawali with ...
