Re: Do you always use grease on your knives or is something

However one single drop of oil will destroy a classic slip joint with Brass liners when stored for long periods. I would say get all the oil off them and use nothing but Ren wax Can somebody explain the physics (or chemistry) of this statement for me? What is it in oil that is harmful to knives wit...

markhayesdesign:

Did you ever end up sending this in to Spyderco W&R? If so, what was the verdict?

Just curious. Sounds like possibly a broken or damaged lockspring or significant wear on the lock.

Re: Finally!! The Portable Hand!

Found this mention of the Portable Hand on page 23 of the old "black cover" instruction booklet for the Triangle Sharpmaker. Thought I would post it here on this thread.

Re: Spyderco C09 CoPilot Varieties

Here is another after-market custom-engraved brass-lined CoPilot. It is the work of gemstone artist John Bailey and was done in 2019. Here is the information on it from the artist's webpage. I believe it has been sold or is otherwise no longer available. I dug up the descrption from a cached version...

Re: 701 Profile Stone Instructions - download here

Thank you, Sal.

I checked the few Spyderco catalogs online and the 701 Profiles last appeared in the 2011 catalog and were absent from the 2012 catalog onward.

Very interesting. I vaguely remember reading about the Fold-A-Vee now that you mention it. Might have been in the Spyderco Story.

Early Sharpmaker

Sal:

What are we looking at here in this photo? Is is some kind of early form of the Sharpmaker, or it it something else? I can see the edges of some brown ceramic rods.

Thanks.

Re: 701 Profile Stone Instructions - download here

Sal:

Found these images of 701 Profile stones online. Any idea when these might have been made. If I recall correctly, this style of red and black Spyderco package came into existence around 2008(?) How much longer beyond that time were the Profiles still being produced?

Re: 701 Profile Stone Instructions - download here

Since the instructions that Fred Sanford (the OP) originally linked to this thread no longer work, I found on another forum where he had uploaded this same document to Google Drive and was able to download the file. I have converted the instructions to image form to allow them to be attached here. T...

Just to shed a little more light on this subject, I would like to explain that the yearly Amsterdam Spyderco Meet which is held on the Sunday before the Spyderco crew moves over to Germany for the IWA trade show. The Spyderco Amsterdam meet started many years ago as gesture to the fans while the sy...

Re: Finally!! The Portable Hand!

Thank you,Sal.

I love hearing about the early Spyderco products and how things got started.

A new run of the Portable Hand would be great! Perhaps a 50th Anniversary edition in 2026?!

Re: Finally!! The Portable Hand!

Sal:

Do you recall who made the components that went into the Portable Hand? Did you do all of the assembly yourself? Any estimates on how many Portable Hands were sold over the years?

Hi Red,

Same to you. To me, it is a time for appreciation. I don't want to be political. But even the protesters should be glad they're not in Hong King. America is a very special place and the only country in the world that was built on an idea.

These C11PBBK knives are out there but very scare. I traded for this one about 10 years ago and have carried it off and on ever since.

Re: What Spyderco is in your pocket today??

I have this little guy in my pocket today. Not a Copilot....but this is a C61 Pegasus. I always liked the way that Sal designed the lines of this little knife so that when the blade is closed, the spine of the blades continues the line established by the butt of the handle. When close it almost look...

Here's another pic (not of my knife, but of a cutaway version Sypderco made as a demonstration piece to show the inner workings of the Native). Found it in the pics I had collected and saved. I think this might have been on display at the Spyderco Factroy Outlet when I stopped by for a visit back on...

The Story of My First Spyderco

I wish I could remember what year this story began.... I know for sure that I was in college at the time (1994-2000) and that it was in the early days of the World Wide Web (and dial-up internet) because I bought the knife online. Regardless, I distinctly remember the very first Spyderco that I ever...

Re: An Original Two-Screw Worker

What a memory, Sal! Great story! Growing up in Lincoln I often went to the fair. I would have been pretty young in 1982 (7 years old). Wish I could say I had memories of seeing a guy and his wife at the Nebraska State Fair selling sharpeners and knives with a hole in the blade. Sadly, I was probably...
