Thanks for the reply Sal. When I replace my Delica, I'm leaning toward the equivalent Salt model. I'm mainly trying to separate reality from the internet myths, especially with regard to the strengthening mechanism, since it is so different from the usual knife steels. Based on the reply above, it l...

Does anyone know what the microstructure is when it's put into the box for sale? Is it martinsitic, or highly deformed austenitic with precipitates? Based on the chemistry, I'm guessing its austenitic after solution treatment, then probably converts to martinsite during the cold rolling/work hardeni...

Yea, I can't remember what the conditions were that caused pitting. Something about bleach soaking maybe?

Is that in CATRA testing, or do they use a different test for serrated edges? Is the testing available for viewing here? How does grinding work harden it? For work hardening to happen, there has to be plastic deformation. The material that is deformed is removed, though I understand there is a thin ...

Questions About H1 Steel

I've been reading for a while now about H1 steel. I have heard it holds an edge like everything from 420HC to better than almost everything. Based on my reading and other research, I have formed some opinions on it, but I figure it's better to get it straight from the source. Below are some question...

I'm not sure if you're being funny, but A-992 is a structural steel. It's literally what you get if you buy steel from Home Depot or Lowe's if it's "welding steel". Though on second thought, that might be 1018, but you get the idea.

Exactly. My point in that testing is just that high wear does not always provide a benefit. Of course that's true of any single property, but high wear resistance is the property that is the most pushed now. Ultra high toughness doesn't fare any better. ASTM A-992 is so tough, even the toughest knif...

That is the point. For people who resharpen their knives after they loose that high sharpness, the supersteels like s30v dont make any difference by themselves. I have always tested edge holding to a high sharpness limit. I cut until the blade stops shaving or it looses the ability to slice a plasti...

My tests were between those 2 steels at much higher sharpness than those videos ended, and perhaps started. I typically stop just after the edge stops shaving, but will still easily slice paper. In that range I didnt see any difference. I can show you some video where 8cr13mov outperformed s35vn too...

Just as a voice of opposition on all fronts, I'll offer the following. Beach has been criticized on some forums for not using high enough magnification, though that was mostly in relation to the effects of slurry on stones. I have never found stropping to remove a burr effectively. Having a burr off...

I did a head to head comparison of a CaraCara in 8cr13mov and a BM Griptillian in S30V. Both were sharpened to the same edge angle by hand using a stone holder at an angle of ~18°/side with a microbevel of 20-21. I used corrugated cardboard as a dulling media and tested sharpness by push cutting thr...

Just thought I'd chime in on this one. Glad to be here, first post. If the steel used in the Meadowlark is the same as the steel used in my old Cara Cara, then the edge retention you describe (very low) means something is wrong. I've compared my Cara Cara to several folders and it has held it's own ...
