Re: Question about sharpening with Spyderco Sharpmaker

Backbevel to 12 degrees per side, sharpen on the 15 degree slots on the Sharpmaker. Touch up at 20 degrees 3 or 4 times and repeat as needed.

Re: "Just In Case" knives?

I have a Gerber Remix clipped in my body harness just in case I need to cut myself out. It stays put and doesn’t get used for anything else. I do take it out periodically and sharpen a pencil or something to check the edge and then either resharpen it or put it back.

Re: Choosing an Edge Angle Based on Steel Type

I think it also has to do with how tough you want your knife to be. Cliff Stamp made a video a while back saying that you could get the same performance between two completely different steels by thinning out the angle on the lower performing steel. You'll be able to cut more from a "cheap&quo...

Re: If you are NEW to sharpening, or having DIFFICULTY, YOU NEED TO SEE THIS THREAD

I have not used any of the current crop of supersteels in years so I can’t comment specifically on how they behave. I have experience with S110V, S60V (formerly CPM 440V), and whatever supersteel Hinderer knives was using 8 or 9 years ago. My experience was the standard kitchen knife steels benefitt...

Re: [W.I.P.]First diy regrind!!

I’ve done others but this one turned out best. It’s an older saber ground Delica I lowered the bevel angle to 5 degrees per side down to 0.015” at the edge bevel. It’s close to needing another thinning, but it works so I’ll delay a bit. I also lowered the tip a little bit. It was sticking out of the...

Re: Choosing an Edge Angle Based on Steel Type

I just keep lowering the angle until I see problems. The lowest so far was a trapper with the clip point blade at 7 dps.

Re: The Last Gun You Bought

That reminds me, did you know that 243 will almost chamber in a 220 Swift? Don't ask me how I know that, but I understand where you are coming from. Let me add, AR magazines will not work in the AI-style Ruger American Rifles. Only AI pattern magazine for bolt action rifles will work. They are avai...

Re: The Last Gun You Bought

Suppressors make so much sense for hunting. It’s crazy they are subject to such stern regulation. It will be awesome if Texas can do that. I’d expect cottage shops in every state by the end of the week.

Re: The Last Gun You Bought

I've come close to pulling the trigger on a Ruger American Ranch in 5.56 with a 16" barrel. If you're into target shooting, the 223/5.56 makes so much sense. It's very accurate, has range out to 600 yards, is easily reloaded for more accuracy, and uses light bullets and relatively small amounts...

Re: The Last Gun You Bought

I was mostly referring to the newly announced ban on Russian ammo, most of which is steel cased. It can shorten barrel life and one of my rifles won’t run it very well, jamming about 1/10 rounds. The other won’t shoot it very well but it runs ok. I was considering a Ruger or CZ bolt gun in 7.62 x 39...

Whatever the last one was, I hope it didn’t shoot steel case ammo.

Re: How big is your edge/micro bevel?

That was the way I first learned about microbevels. It was a way to speed up sharpening. Leonard Lee explained it related to chisels and plane blades in his sharpening book. Using a coarse stone for the back bevel and adding a polished microbevel works pretty fast.

Looks like maxamet is indeed a particle steel. No models in my price range anyway.

Maxamet isn’t particle steel? Do tell. I always figured it was but I’m a couple years behind in the newest steel game.

Re: How big is your edge/micro bevel? As

I use the 17/20 for knives used to cut bones, like for wings and such. I’ve been known to go as low as 7/10 for experimental purposes. It worked fine but took a lot longer than I was willing to spend to reduce the bevels on more than a couple of knives to try it.

Re: How big is your edge/micro bevel?

Why thank you. I’ve been around a while, I just got more into firearms lately. Reloading is like sharpening for your rifle/pistol. I usually use the abbreviation DPS (degrees per side) but forgot to there. That 5 degrees is per side. I typically increase the bevel 3 dps. My backbevel guides are 12 a...

Re: How big is your edge/micro bevel?

If I can shape the edge exactly as I want, the micro bevel is just that. Mine are typically the width of a hair or smaller. I have a Delica that was getting pretty worn. I reground it and it’s like new or better. It is one of the older saber ground ones. The primary grind is 5 degrees per side, whic...

Re: Steel Toughness

The toughness tests are performed on one or two different heat treatments. There are large 1095 blades that will take full power accidental impacts against rock or wire. Not only will the blade not break, the edge won’t even chip. It will just roll. Such knives are usually soft enough to file. Such ...

Re: Steel Toughness

What are the general rules of toughness and edge stability? Carbides, grain structure, carbon or other metals etcetera. Grain size, hardness, and carbide volume generally effect toughness most. Carbide size plus the other three effect edge stability. Decreasing grain size, carbide volume, and hardn...
