Re: Hard truths and observations

also sending it back for service or replacement parts is not really practical for me since i live in europe - i just buy spyderco because i like the designs and i’m some kind of steel nerd 🤓 It's an option available to you that involves sticking it in the post and probably 99% chance of getting the...

Re: Hard truths and observations

Borrowed from Blade Forum and thought it very relevant. Can you do this for a Chinese SELLER ? In a year, 5 years, 10 years, 20 years ? "Recently landed a used SE Dodo off the exchange. This was a knife I'd been looking to find for sometime and while this one was a user, I jumped on it. Overal...

Re: Hard truths and observations

‘Things aren't automatically lower quality just because they're made in Asian countries.’ I think you’d change your mind if you manufacture there. They automatically try to make things cheaper, they automatically think price is the issue/main criteria. They will do everything possible to cut costs, ...

Re: New reveal policy: is it the end of an era?

There seems to be a lot of angst about a process that has yet to be implemented. Might be wise to see how it works before criticizing it. (Important disclaimer: let me just note here that I am not telling anyone what to do, merely stating my opinion.) It's the modern way, "I want it now" ...

Re: Hard truths and observations

I see a design like the Shaman as a physical embodiment of tens of thousands of years of history, hundreds of years of design and technology, 60 years of personal touch, the result of hundreds of hours to form, hundreds of hands and minds to build. Yeah, you got. "It's just a knife" sal I...

Re: Guys who put lanyards on your knives, why?

I don't have any on my spydercos now but at one point I did on the standard delica. The idea was it made it a little easier to pull it out when wearing gloves. I honestly think for some people it is more of a style thing. That said, I was once using my knife to cut some stuff in the woods surrounde...

Re: Hard truths and observations

Here’s something. The Canadian place I order from raised their prices way up when the CBSA thing went down, and they’ve been getting knives in again, but the prices are still where they raised them to. Not to cool. Some really are ridiculous. Have you told them ? With examples ? Venting on a forum ...

Re: Hard truths and observations

I'll never understand the prestige Titanium enjoys. Because it’s used in the aircraft / space industry. SR-71 and probably every jet engine. My father is a metallurgist, worked for IMI in UK in the late 50’s/early 60’s and was on the team that won an award for working out some process that allowed ...

Re: Hard truths and observations

Well said ViVi I have a Counterfit Spyderco, a big serrated Hawkbill, “VG-10” it says lol It was in the bottom of my cupboard until a few weeks ago, unused. I misplaced my Endura 1 SE, needed to cut rope on containers so hauled out the counter fit. The blade is blunter after 2 weeks cutting a few ro...

Re: Hard truths and observations

I've mentioned it before. $200 for a knife over say 20 years (just for calculation purposes), $10 a year for a knife. $10 a year for a knife I WANT to own and proud to use / show (I still get ooohhs and aarrggghhs over my 27 year old Endura which at present is around $2-3 a year cost since I purchas...

Re: Hard truths and observations

Ozzie $$$

Exchange rate is 0.7 sg the moment. So US $13.27.

Cost of things here way more than US.

To the OP
If it’s that easy to design and make a knife for less, market it, distribute it AND live off it, do it.

8 $ per hour?
Is it possible to live on that?
LOL, it doesn't surprise me to see that a lot in the US can't live on it.

Our minimum here in Oz is $18.97 or something like that and that's borderline for any renter
unless they work excessive hours or have 2 jobs.

Re: Dyad II or New Concept Double Blade Folder?

Dyad is on my list to buy. I'd have to think about what blade shapes on it. My advice is to get one of the full sized C-44 Dyads before you get any of the "Junior" Dyad models or any of the Micro Dyads. Even if you have to settle for the older ATS-55, Micarta models you won't regret it. Y...

Re: Hard truths and observations

A few of the Chinese makers are manufacturing outstanding quality knives with perfectly heat treaded super steels...well under $200. Yes they do, but here's a few hard truths as well. It's hard for companies like Spyderco (and others) to make knives in the US and other places and pay decent wages e...

It’s a good idea for a thread.

How do you find out if a knife is designed by sal ?
I just looked up 2 on spyderco web sites and it doesn’t say.

Re: Your top 5 Sal Glesser designs?

I´d suggest only knifes you really have handled, not only saw depicted or heard people say that they were great. I think you are asking a bit much. People in the US have much more opportunity to see more knives than we do here in Aus and I’d say the same would apply elsewhere. I can often tell I wo...

Re: Serrated January

I'm telling you all again it's the type of serration pattern that tends to make the difference. Because the rounded/wavy type pattern that is on the K-04 and K-05 models works like a dream on food prep jobs. Also if you are lucky enough to find one of the older, full Spyderedged AUS-8 Catcherman mo...
