Ah, Moki. I think you’re onto something here, Blerv. I don’t have many Mokis—only micarta Calypso, VG10 Ayoob sprint, SB Caly 3.5, Kiwi4—but each sure is smooth.
Yea it’s an odd thing for sure, lol. I do love mine as well :)

I would have assumed no washers. It was one of the unique things from this maker for decades.

Re: Is this normal spyderhole finish? [Seki city quality]

Yea that looks normal. If the finish is annoying I’d get a dowel and some diamond paste. Just be careful not to dull the edge of you will lose a lot of the grip. My Peter Herbst has a beautiful opening hole and it’s smooth, it’s a pain to actually open one handed though.

Re: Jimping on the back of handles

I can see it with gloves. Skin is going to slip and in extreme cases leave some dermis behind. Still though, handle ergonomics is going to keep your hand from sliding up. Especially in a hammer grip. Most my saber grip/barehand use is extremely light work. The thumb ramp, jimped or not, is mainly a ...

Re: oH tHe TiP iS ToO FrAGilE

Many would say a knife is a tool that is designed to be used hard. Others would say that’s why people have multiple tools. I’m personally more in this camp; if I need to go camping with a folder I’ll probably pick one from the lot that’s more well rounded. If a day at the office a bit thinner and po...

Re: Jimping on the back of handles

It’s never bothered me. It’s likely just aesthetic or for a tactile feeling. Some texture makes a product feel less “toy-like”. IMHO jimping (if for traction) in general is quite silly. Handle geometry is King. Many years ago there was a YouTube “celebrity” putting skateboard tape all over his knive...

Re: Sal, what are your thoughts on the SE pattern on the new Ayoob?

I’m trying to figure out how you grind serrations onto such a curved blade in the first place. I suppose it’s the choice between a bespoke cnc grinding wheel precisely matching the blade shape (sounds expensive to me) or a machinist grinding the serrations on a standard wheel, with inherent comprom...

Re: C-60 Ayoob Campaign: No I Won't Shut Up

You can’t compare the Tenacious to a sprint run Massad Ayoob. Strictly on a volume basis there is more time to practice, more you can second off (since they are cheap and in steady production), the blade shape and steel are totally different, etc. All this assuming the teeth are a mistake and not by...

Re: Sal, what are your thoughts on the SE pattern on the new Ayoob?

Spyderco’s sprint run system will never turn off a single fan. If anything it’s the closest thing to custom knives for production pricing the enthusiasts will ever see. Even if every serrated sprint had messed up teeth many people are buying these to use, not to ogle with felt gloves. Highly specifi...

Sorry your teeth aren’t great.

I’ll stay the course and get one. So long as it’s sharp and has a 4-way clip I’ll be very happy.

Re: Thin grinds?

FFG is trendy but often limits thinness behind the edge. There are a lot of Spyderco’s with thin factory geometry. Just some that aren’t. Even the thin ones though have to tolerate a wide user base.

Regrinding is always an option though!

Re: How do I get over my crippling fear of corrosion?

Have a safe Queen and a user. The amount of rust that would make a knife unusable or dangerous is a high threshold. Get used to washing, wiping and oiling. Use compressed air (or canned) to get rid of the extra mineral oil or jump to a more toxic but effective product like Tuff-Cloth. If all else fa...

Re: Tool Steels Are Much Easier To Sharpen

There are a lot of factors to consider from the formula to the bake. All of which are above my head, lol. In general though if I recall correctly Chromium carbides in non-CPM style steels (like ZDP) tend to be large and less homogenous. I’m a pretty mariginal sharpener but too have seen the low carb...

Re: And sometimes they're perfect.

I adore a custom or a Sebenza but really these Spyderco’s are usually amazing for $60-100. Often with better grinds and better steels.

It’s the Mustang/Camaro v BMW debate. Most measurements of speed are very simple as are most measurements of a good folding knife. Just enjoy the budget thrills :)

The Manix2 LW is interesting. The cage and the ribbed FRP are definitely an evolution of the design over slab lockbacks of year past. Colin Chapman would be proud.

These old knives are so seldom seen it’s just demand v supply. The right mix of obsessed people I could see over $400. I would be shocked at less than $250. Set a reserve and let it fly if you want.

Re: In Defense of Liners

I adore linerless knives. Lightweight and cheap. Drilled liners annoy me, more money and collectors of lint. In general though 95% of my collection sits in a Spyderpack or near it. I beat up the cheap ones more than the rest. Plus a liner-free FRN knife is basically built on nylon washers. They are ...

Re: "As close to perfection as possible" folder from Spyderco?

It’s a wonderful design Sal but you might want to do something about that Seki backlock. It’s so frustrating when they develop blade play. I owned 3 Caly 3.5 in ZDP and they all came with significant vertical blade play from the factory. I had to sell two of them and only keep one for my collection...
