Re: Let's talk about the upcoming phil wilson b&t (sprig)
Jim, only 4 knives back with damage, 3 utility type and one fillet. Utilities were back when I was still doing hollow grinds. Each has a story and the user admitted to misuse. I was able to regrind them and still return back a useable knife. Some luck involved but also a custom is more of an investm...

Re: Let's talk about the upcoming phil wilson b&t (sprig)
I also want to contribute a little on the subject of custom knife grinds and production knives. Custom guys can skirt the edge of disaster (broke and chipped blades) a lot closer than production companies. It is a matter of risk management. I can interview a potential user and get a good idea of how...

Re: Let's talk about the upcoming phil wilson b&t (sprig)
Back to the question of how Lance is sharpening this knife. He is experimenting with different abrasives and grits and has narrowed down to a range he is looking at. In general on my knives I like an aggressive edge for the range of uses they are intended. A range of 320 or so to 600 grit has worked...

Re: Who would buy a cruwear Southfork?
Lance, Appreciate the company. I think I also see a mod 70 Winchester, pre 64 and a couple of Henry levers? Derailing also but can't help my self. I inherited my GD's A5 Belguim, 32 inch full choke. Was going to send it to Browning to re store but decided to leave it alone. I know he shot 1000's of ...

Re: Who would buy a cruwear Southfork?
Lance, nice collection, I see a R1100, couple of B A5's , 1022, Daisy Red Ryder, Model 97, some pellet guns. Some high power rifles, you have it covered. Love it. Phil

Re: Who would buy a cruwear Southfork?
Hi all, very nice to see examples of my knives posted here. Does my heart good that some out there in daily use. The South Fork has had a pretty good run and if it were to be re-introduced or a sprint run with a different steel, tool steel for example then I would vote for one of the A11's or one of...

Re: What do the numbers mean in the sv steels?
Bodog, the original name for CPM S60V was CPM 440V. The idea was a grade with Chrome % like 440C (17) but with Vanadium. The original name for CPM S90V was 420V, the idea here again was chrome % like 420 (14) but with Vanadium. These names have been dropped by Crucible but still show up here and the...

Re: What do the numbers mean in the sv steels?
Swigert, the S stands for Stainless and the numbers like 60, 90, 110 are the amount of Vanadium in percent. 60 is 6 %, 90 is 9% and so on. If no S like in CPM 10V then it is tool steel and 10% V. Phil

Re: Spyderco/Farid K2
Laethageal, Yes the measure point got thicker as the angle was reduced and the edge thinned out a bit. A bit confusing the way I described it. One attribute of the A11 and other higher carbide grades with the higher hardness is that the edge degrades from wear. However the wear is very small since t...

Re: Spyderco/Farid K2
K2 test and evaluation continues I re-sharpened with an EZ Lap diamond plate, 600 grit and at a slightly lower angle. This raised the sharpening line and the new thickness above the edge is now .018 average, up from the .012 earlier measured. There was not much burr but a few swipes on a leather str...

Re: Spyderco/Farid K2
Hi all, I have been off on a trip and just returned last night to find the K2 in the box. Have to get caught up but before I do any testing but wanted to offer some first impressions and some tech information. Yep its a big knife, and has to be to fold that much blade into the handle. I did a hardne...

Re: Spyderco/Farid K2
Hi Farid, Congratulations on your collaboration. This is the first production folder, as far as I know with CPM 10V and is pretty unique in that regard. Cudos to you and Spyderco. It looks like a very clean functional design and will have a lot of uses not appreciated until it gets out there in the ...

Surfgringo, I second on the diamond rod. I am sure the SM diamond will work just fine as well. Very effective and quick. The 600 grit is best if you can get it. Work over some of your other knives or just use on a pc of steel to knock off some of the roughness before you use it on the good stuff. It...

Hi Aotea, I think I saw some photos on another forum where you used the Punta Chivato on some very nice fillets. Can't tell you how much I appreciate seeing feedback like that on my knives. Both your and the S Gringo live in some incredible places. I moved to the mountains about 10 years ago and don...

Well that test gives us one point on the curve. The hardness on this blade is reported to be in the RC 62 range. At this hardness there is not going to be much if any visable plastic deformation before bending fracture. From the photos I could not see any evidence of a hinge, it broke pretty clean. ...

The article pretty much tells the story on the partial tang. The initial idea was to save steel back when CPM S110V was in very short supply and not sure that they were even going to make any more. Not so much an issue of cost but of supply. Now I just like making them that way. I still do full tang...

go4thegusto, Nice bull and congratulations on taking that guy with a bow. Your original post mentioned you will be taking a diamond sharpener along. To me that is the key to your question. Jim, nice test, and video. Cardboard can do significant edge damage especially if you hit some junk in there. Looks like this edge faired very well. Some wonder why cut wood on a test like this The answer is that with wood you can put some side loads on the blade. Cardboard and rope are pretty much ...
