Re: Does anyone know anything about BD1n??

Hi All, I managed to finagle a test pc of BD1N at Blade last year. I have done 3 knives with it so far. One is the knife that SGringo and SBaker tested. I made a 8 inch fillet and a smaller utility hunter. I used the fillet last season and report that the edge holding was very good, in the category ...

Re: SHOT Show

Especially looking forward to the show this year. Good to see all the Spyder Crew again and fellow collaborators. Timing is good since the Sprig has just become available. Comfortable walking shoes are a good idea as Sal mentioned as well as a GPS to find your way around. Phil

Re: Southfork or Sprig or both?

Thanks Tom for the kind words. Glad your knives a getting good use. I don't have any news on a fillet knife other than Spyderco does have some prototypes. Sal or Eric are the best ones to answer that and I know Sal has chimed in on it before. As far as blade steel CPM S90V would work, I have used th...

Re: Southfork or Sprig or both?

Needless to say I am pretty excited about the Sprig. I don't know the release date but I got mine not too long ago so hoping they will be out for the Shot Show. I think you all will like the edge geometry and combined with S90V they will serve a large variety of tasks including kitchen work. Sprig i...

Re: not so sure on S110V

HI Dubya3, I think CPM S110V in the Mule Team is an excellent choice for a game processing knife. The geometry furnished in the Mule Team is pretty conservative and if used as you describe will be just fine. No problem with doing 3 animals on a trip, I have done that several times with Antelope, sma...

Re: To the Hunters on Here

Pocketzen, for processing game I like an edge that has some bite. A fine polished edge will tend to just slide on hair and hide. To check for bite get some manila rope from Lowe's or a hardware store and do some cutting. If you get the edge right it will cut clean and leave a shiny side to the cut a...

Re: s30v vs. cts-204p edge retention on rope

Hi Lance, now you have done it. You cut 30 feet of rope and now you will probaby cut thousands. You will not be able to help yourself. It is interesting that your dulling profile on ½ inch poly rope is pretty close to mine on ¾ inch manila. I do the same sawing motion that you did but takes 7 back a...

Re: Let's talk about the Cast 440C used by the Serrata

Cast 440C blades as in the Serrata have their own personality. In my experience very easy to sharpen and are very aggressive cutters. Given the grain structure it is somewhat surprising that they are also very durable. A bit of history and update: The Boye cast 440C knives are still available throug...

Re: What makes a good Fillet Knife?

Thanks guys always nice to hear about my fillet knives in action. I got to use one last couple of days myself. I was over on the coast for a few days and got some nice bottom fish. "Fish and Chips and Fish Tacos" Sal , I will be at Blade. No table but have a chance to walk around and visit...

Re: What makes a good Fillet Knife?

SGringo, nice job on the Corvina. Looks like what we call White Sea Bass here on the Pacific coast. Every one has a bit different technique and is interesting to hear and see the variations. I fillet a lot of salmon during the season. They are not so tough as some and you can just cut behind the gil...

Re: What makes a good Fillet Knife?

I like a blade with some flex so as to have a better feel as the knife slides over the back bone. It also helps along with the flex to have some extra length so that you have some knuckle clearance from the cutting board on smaller fish. A narrow tip allows you to cut behind the head and rotate the ...

Re: Strange surface structure after regrinding

HI Centurio, If you get the right grit finish and in the right lighting you can see this on many of the conventional melt steels we use. Your photo shows it clearly. It shows up on 154CM, ATS 34, N690, D2, and very evident on Cast 440C (Dendritic). You can really bring it out if the surface is etche...

Lance, that is a great and thoughtful gesture and well deserved. I think I can speak for all here that we appreciate your hands on real world actual testing and use of Spyderco knives. You work with them in conditions more severe than most and give honest straight forward reporting on performance. A...

Re: Spyderco ZDP-189 HRC?

Can'tfreehand. If you have access to a technical library look for a book called "TOOL STEELS" by Roberts and Cary. It is also available direct from ASM (American Society of Metals) but expensive if you have to buy it ($100+) It has a very good section on A2 and D2 grades and if you have a ...

Re: Report on m4 corrosion resistance

I am somewhat surprised on the corrosion resistance of SurfGringo's knife. His blade is CPM M4, not M4 and Spyderco also uses the CPM version. There is only 4% chrome in this grade, less than A2 for example, so there is not going to be much chrome floating around in the matrix to resist corrosion no...

Re: Report on m4 corrosion resistance

I have seen better than expected corrosion resistance on CPM M4 but Lance's use in a wet and salty environment kind of surprised me. I think his attention to keeping the gunk and salt off after use it has a lot to do with it. A couple of observations: The chrome in M4 starts out as a chrome carbide ...

Re: Toughness and its effect on grind, performance, and edge

Hi Sal, huh which model? I forgot two many gin and tonic, oh now remember, It is a hybrid B&T "Sprig" a little wider blade and a tad longer. Wanted a little more beef and reach for those big tough fish. I have some some data on heat treating CPM M4 and will pass it on to you at Shot. P...

Re: Toughness and its effect on grind, performance, and edge

The Gringo Therom Here's my theory, which may or may not hold water. I believe that a tougher steel (let's use m4 as an example) that is heat treated to maximize toughness could be ground thinner than a higher carbide steel and still be able to accomplish the same type of work without edge damage. L...

Re: Let's talk about the upcoming phil wilson b&t (sprig)

Edge-e, I normally form the first edge with a wet Silicon Carbide belt (320 or 220) on the grinder at very slow speed. Then to the stone to get it cutting clean and even and then dull the edge on the stone. Resharpen on a diamond plate or back to the SC stone. I use Windex on the stone and plate. Phil

Re: VG-10 Steel Blanks

Hi Dutch, are you looking for a "blank" shaped like a knife blade or just a bar of steel to shape yourself. If a bar take a look at Alpha Knife supplies. Chuck has a large variety of steels in small quanities, mostly bars. The Bohler-Uddeholm N690 grade is basically the same as VG10. Phil
