I believe that the moly and tungston are at fairly low levels and used mainly for grain refinement. I don't think they were significant in the early spectral burns. I wasn't aware an analysis was done. Thanks for the info. Tungsten carbides wouldn't be as hard as vanadium in any event from what I'v...

ZDP is 3% Carbon 20% Chrome. Chrome carbides run about RC 68 giving the steel a hardness of about RC67. This material while hard is not that difficult to sharpen compared to S30V with RC 84 Vanadium carbides...Take Care...Ed Ed, according to the chart Vassali posted it has some molybendum and tungs...

one question to someone that might be better qualified than me. No guessing or presuming please. Should I go buy new DMT sharpeners to use ONLY for my H1 knives as I occasionally use higher carbon stainless and even carbon steels with them? For that matter should I be using different equipment for s...

Thanks Sal. It's excellent to hear it. I'll buy one. I couldn't afford the military at the time and it's bugging me. As usual you're a few steps ahead. Joe L.

Sal, if you have any of that BG 42 left...

Can you use it up on a sprint run of something small, metal handled, and flat ground ? With a good polish it would be really nice. Come to think of it it would look good with G2 if it was polished up good. I went to a knife show yesterday and saw nothing on the market from any big maker using it exc...

From the chart:

3C-20Cr-Mo-W (P/M steel) would mean

3% carbon + 20% Chrome + ? moly + ? Tungsten

What does the "P/M Steel" mean? Joe L.

ZDP isn't new. It's just new to us. Someone on a different thread in a different forum had a grading F to A+ for hardness and toughness in some Japanese steels ( including Gin 1, ATS 34 & ZDP189). ZDP 189 had the best grade in hardness but not the best grade in toughness. I don't recall it's exa...

The same knives the BG42 should have been on, with a much higher level of polish than on the military *hint* Joe L.

endura ( not laminated), delica, calypso or Native or Navigator. Smallish blades that won't be chopping, and don't have complex grinds. Keep the cost down and offer the ZPD knives as at a premium. Don't totally give up on any current steels as they have their place and are excellent steels. Joe L.

Dialex, I was surfing your design page and would like to complement it. The 3 I would love to buy if made to Spyderco quality and prices are the
1) Guardian Angle
2) Toptac
3) Diabowique.

It would be nice to see them in steel some day. Good Work! Joe L.

To be honest if there had to be a trade off between the Titanium handles and lesser steels I would take the blade steel everytime with no hesitation. What in fact is a knife after all? The Blade is by far the most important part. The titanium handled M16 by CKRT still only cuts like a knife with a A...

I agree and have seen examples of that on these threads. Mistakes aren't even what I'm talking about. An example: Knife center of the internet sold mine to me for seventy something dollars ( under MSRP even). They're an example of good service. Which companies sold over MSRP, or didn't deliver on or...

I guess then we should set up a government that determines what price everything should be? Perhaps set up plans for overall production...maybe with a 5 year span? It would be much more fair. Everyone would be considered equal within the system. You are free to ask anyone from Eastern Europe how we...

I agree that the knifecenter is the best. I routinely get things the next day without paying extra. I got my ZDP's there too, without a markup. I got it under Suggested retail even. Joe L.

Twenty something spydercos and a tackle box or two full of all kinds of other knives from M2, D2, BG42, ATS 34& 154,440V, S30V, VG1, talonite, and now ZDP 189. All my carry knives are spydercos but every now and then a good deal on an unusual knife will catch my eye. Quite a few of them are just...

Look, I have not done any reading on it or seen reviews of it or comparisons between it and other steels, but unless it is adamantium-like in its sharpness, toughness, corrosion resistance, and hardness, I just don't see why my other knives in "lesser" steels are not adequate. There isn't...

I've got a couple BG 42 knives myself. I think everybody fortunate enough to get one of this run will be very satisfied. One thing that the military probably won't have is a highly polished blade though. This is a very good looking steel when really polished. Like VG 1 or AUS 8A, perhaps better. The...

Thanks for the welcome Zenheretic. I'm not going to give up wishing and hoping as they are free :) . I'd personally hope for CPM125V, and/or CPM M4 ( I don't mind carbon steels at all).

Perhaps someday. Joe L.
