A Spyderco made by Benchmade?

I don't mean to be too inflamatory with that title <img src="wink.gif" width=15 height=15 align=middle> , but I am curious about something that Bob Terzuola said about his first collaboration with Spyderco: "When Sal Glesser of Spyderco first approached me for a Clipit design in 1989,...

I think that everyone is trying to judge too quickly. We won't really know whether one or more of the CPM steels are optimal for knives for some years yet. Spyderco et al are still in the learning phase of the use of these steels for production cutlery. My only concern with the CPM steels is that th...

I would like to nominate...

I know that Spyderco is currently mired in "SKU ****," producing special sprint runs of the Civilian, Native, and Military, all while gearing up a small horde of new models like the Lum Chinese, Vesuvius, Meerkat, several MBC folders, and no doubt several yet unnamed prototypes in developm...

Sal, Don't the glass and carbon laminates have greater compression strength than steel, or is the problem one of fatigue? I was thinking about the way that Kevlar is used in carbon fiber or fiberglass hulls of kayaks and some high-tech racing sailboats. What they do is compose the laminate with an o...

Thanks for the explanation Sal. The idea of a composite compression lock is an intriguing one. It quickly brought to mind the notion of a G10 handle with a Carbon Fiber compression lock. :D CF is often used for things like gears and cams where high shear strength is required. Of course there is a be...

Hi Sal, Wouldn't it have made more sense to use a G10 lock lever and metal spring, or is there some reason that G10 doesn't make a good lock lever? Was that protoype for the old C24 Blackhawk? (Which reminds me, did the Native Chief get shelved or is it still on the future SKU list? Seems like you'r...

Hi Sal, I guess I'm sort of a "refinements" kind of guy -- I'm always wondering if something could be improved or used in a better way. Actually I've been thinking about G10 as well. All the advanced composites are really interesting, and G10 seems like it isn't being used to its full pote...

Sal has mentioned that the Lum Tanto will be availble in G-10 the indeterminate future. But I imagine that the description on the site is a typo since the model pictured is in titanium, and the chart also lists it as titanium.

Optimal use of materials.

There are a lot of new materials being played with nowadays in knife making, and naturally I wonder if they are being put to the best use. The new CPM steels, like S90V and 3V designed for corrosion resistance, wear resistance, and toughness, seem like they would be the ideal materials for knife loc...

Thanks Sal, I can really begin to appreciate how difficult it be to take a knife from concept to production. No wonder it is often a matter of years.

You know, designing a knife is harder than is appears. I spent some time trying to draw up my concept, and found that the width required for the drop-pont skinner blade 4" long, resulted in a massive knife overall. It seems that to get a properly proportioned wide drop-point skinner blade into ...

Thanks Clay, I was thinking about it, and I realized that this concept would be ideal utility folder for everyday use. I also realized that it might make a good commission for a custom bladesmith. It is unreasonable to expect Spyderco or any other manufacturer to taylor make an SKU for each of our i...

A weird notion...

I know that I have pestered Sal overmuch of late, so after this I'll give it a long rest. Anyway, a few factors were mulling in my head, naturally resulting in a new SKU idea. The factors: 1. Dozier folder collaboration impossible. 2. Spyderco wants to limit new collaborations and focus on inhouse d...

Query for Clipit experts.

I've been trying to make a list of all clipits past and present that used g10 handles and had tip-up carry (or a tip-up option). Here is what I've got so far: 1. C08GS Harpy 2. C15G Terzuola 3. C19G Terzuola Junior 4. C41G Native, blue (Bladeforums.com limited edition 300) 5. C48G Wegner 6. C49G Weg...

Here is a rumour that I just got from an archived post (July 2000) at the Bladforums' Spyderco Forum: A G10-handled Wegner Mouse. Is this actually in the works as well, or just a fantasy?
