Re: Community Sharpening Journal
I also picked up the 12K kuromaku, obtained the other glass stones in grits as described before already and have a super grit progression project in mind using all of them. Do you use any magnification to look at the edges? I've used 10x, and 30x loupes and they are helpful in seeing exactly what e...

Re: Community Sharpening Journal
I went ahead and experimented with the 1k and 4k progression. Started with a pretty good mirror polish on a ZDP blade. The 1k make the reflection blurry. The 4k polished it up pretty well. But I think to return it to it's finish to start with I may want to the higher grits or strop it. But I'm happ...

Re: Community Sharpening Journal
Just received the Shapton Glass 4000 grit. Took my H1 pacific Salt SE and touched it up a bit. Amazing edge swiftly, cant wait to work with all the grits. I have every Shapton glass stone grit from 320 to 16000. I think I bought them one at a time. Which direction are you planning to go in grit? Hi...

Re: Community Sharpening Journal
One thing I've wondered about is how large of change is good enough to do a good job without needing every grit in a set. A couple of weeks ago I sharpened 5 kitchen knives for a friend. They were from the same company but I don't remember which. The blades were stainless but I didn't look to see wh...

Re: Community Sharpening Journal
That would be a great title for a printed magazine. I used to be an active member on a really popular "straight Razor" forum and the main reason I was there was to learn more about the different stones and strops they used to sharpen with. It was most interesting because those Straight Ra...

Re: I am gravitating towards smaller knives
I like smaller knives unless the job demands a bigger, stronger, longer knife. But those type of tasks usually (for me) come up when I'm working on a carpentry project of something like that. Smaller knives are just easier to handle. Also, I try to stay away from situations where a larger knife may ...

Re: C22 Michael Walker in 2019
My apologies if I offend anyone with this idea, but would anyone else like to see this knife made with a different lock? Or would that be too sacrilegious? I'm not offended, but feel that a Walker with any other lock type is missing the point by a mile :) I think Michael Walker invented this lock (...

Re: Is the Dragonfly Obsolete?
I don't think there is a knife design/model, etc. that will ever make the Dragonfly obsolete. It's a perfect design for a knife that size IMO. I've had a few over the years and the only one I've hung on to is the one with the SB blade. I'd like to see a DF with XHP but I like the SB. I think most th...

Re: A slip joint use and safety discussion
I picture folders in 3 categories when it comes to the lock or slip joint. 1. Good reliable lock 2. Slip joint like Spyderco's with safety built in with the finger choil. That's really good. 3. Traditional slip joints. The half stop models are great and my preference. I've been cut a couple of times...

Lock strength and safety
My thoughts and opinion only. Lots of discussion about lock strength and such. Cold Steel has videos of how their tri-lock is stronger than others. Maybe it is. It is a great lock. I have 3 Cold steel small folders and LOVE them all for different needs. HOWEVER: To me the tests (comparisons) of thei...

Re: New Para 3 Red or Blue Loctite?
I don't know which loc-tite that knife has but I can't imagine any time anything stronger than blue would be needed on a knife. I've never used red loc-tite but my understanding is you only use that when you don't ever want the screw, nut/bolt, etc. to be taken apart. Possibly it would create a lock...

Re: New fixed blade - need help
I bought two mule knives. One ended up in the kitchen and the other was a work knife for me. The only thing I HATE about the shape is the area that curves around the little hole is WAY to "curvey" for a work knife. For the kitchen it's ok. But that is where my thumb rests when cutting. Whe...

Re: How sharp should an EDC knife be?
C’mon, polished edges are useful. You never know when you might need to clean some food out of your teeth or pluck a rogue nose hair. True that- plus if you polish your less than stainless blades that oxidation has nowhere to start and it’s just banished to the depths once more. I like using the po...

Bearfacedkiller and MichaelScott, you guys have been drinking too much or not enough. lol I don't know. :) The mention of a straight razor was a bad example as a few have said. It is a completely different type of tool with a different use. Me bad, me sorry. :) So, let's take two Delica knives with...

Re: What is sharp?
I voted for sharp meaning the tool cuts with it's intended purpose as good as possible. I think this would hold true for people who carry a knife every day or a chef. I feel the edge apex's sharpness, keenness, etc. is a smaller part of the big picture. The big picture includes blade thickness, grin...

How sharp should an EDC knife be?
A straight razor needs to be super razor sharp to give a good, comfortable shave. But that very delicate edge will be destroyed by just opening an envelope. Destroyed for what it was intended for I mean. That's because it's so thin and fragile at the apex I think. So, even if a pocket knife has a th...

Re: FRN Scales
IMO FRN scales may be the best (or as good as any) in the world. They have held up to anything I've needed in a knife handle. There's no problem with getting them wet. If they get filthy you can clean them easily without worrying about altering color or anything else. Or, if the color of the FRN is ...

Re: Do you ever wish you only had 1 knife?
I know that must sound crazy to most of you, but hear me out lol. I've always liked the idea of having items that I carry for many years and sort of grow with and have history with. Many of the knives I own, I have practically no relationship with. Does that make sense? I've used them all, but it's...
