Re: Sal, what are the chances for a AEB-L spydie ?
"The problems are always more complex than it might appear. I appreciate that some of you like the design and would like to see it in other variations. I like the design, and I'm the guy that designed it. But in reality, the Pattada is not a fast mover and with a minimum of 1200 pcs per run, we...

When bureaucrats and bean counters are involved only they are in charge regardless of who says they have the final decision.

Re: Sal, what are the chances for a AEB-L spydie ?
Some fair points made, but honest question: do you make/design physical things for a living? (Not doing this for a living doesn’t invalidate your comments, but doing so would certainly give you some perspective on the myriad factors involved.) Although your observations on the outcomes of the decis...

I wonder if spyderco will ignore this like the ball bearing issue until someone with a ton of followers makes a big deal about it on youtube causing a big argument on the forums.

Re: Sal, what are the chances for a AEB-L spydie ?
"Edge retention" is really not the most helpful term. AEB-L and its brethren will do a great job keeping an edge from failing, and a less-great job keeping it from eroding. If you want to make a pocket knife with AEB-L, make it a Chaparral lightweight sprint. That 2mm blade stock is the t...

Re: Thoughts on Spyderco Tropen
The tropan is a no for me in more ways than one. The safety issue is just the final thing that said "nope, don't care to even pick one up and play with it at a knife store."

Re: Sal, what are the chances for a AEB-L spydie ?
I don't hunger for AEB-L but would give it a go just because I have not tried it. I understand AEB-L to have somewhat better edge-retention and toughness than VG10, if somewhat less corrosion-resistance. I could make that work. Define the variables that lead to dulling and you'll be correct if the ...

Re: Sal, what are the chances for a AEB-L spydie ?
I'd vote for a Nilakka with AEBL at 62 with the original zero grind that S30V failed at. Give people a huge reason to talk and shake some things up a little in the knife world and a reason to consider something other than the most expensive steels on the market...

Re: 2018 Spyderco Forum Knife! Info & Sign-up
I wonder if this knife has any deeper meaning. It's a very popular design from both father and son when the father seems to be taking a very deliberate course to step down and let his son start taking the mantle. It's also in a steel Sal has said is one of his favorites. Kind of a salute to Sal's ef...

Agreed, except for job specific knives that need to be non-magneticThe Meat man wrote: ↑Sat Jun 02, 2018 9:01 pmTitanium is not cheap. With the options now available in H-1 and LC200N, I doubt there would be much point in making an all-titanium model, especially if it costs two or three times as much.

Re: How to oil non-stainless steel?
I picked up some Maxamet and CRUWEAR recently, along with some other things which are non-stainless. I also picked up some Frog Lube to treat the steels with to help them resist oxidation. So my question is, how much oil (or in this case, Frog Lube) needs to be on the steel for it to protect and do...

Re: Sal, what are the chances for a AEB-L spydie ?
If they use the same format as the other Mule Teams, it wouldn't get the chance to show the features that make it good. There's no point in making a big steel slab to showcase the strengths of a steel are precisely on the other end of the spectrum. That would be an apples to apples comparison if th...

Jim you've made your opinion on the steel clear. The vast majority of your statements are not precise enough to confirm or refute, Larrin has addressed the ones that are. If you have data or more precise statements then I'm all ears (but we've done this before). Additionally, dismissively calling a...

Re: Sal, what are the chances for a AEB-L spydie ?
I can safely say I've never seen a PhD handle with such kindness a layperson dismissing his views without any citations. Seriously. Not that i can say i rub elbows with doctors very often. But i think I'd be firmly out of bounds if i told albert einstein i knew more than he about general relativity...

Re: Sal, what are the chances for a AEB-L spydie ?
I’m not trying to put anyone in their place. I’m just discussing steel. Fair enough. But you did state what needed to be stated and it does directly conflict with a belief that's been pushed for years that is not as universal as a lot of people think. So i thank you. It was a breath of fresh air. I...

....But your statements, friend, are inaccurate. Maybe you can preface your statements to make them more accurate? Simply saying thicker s30v at 10 dps will out cut an opinel is bs. That's the truth for most people. Look I appreciate debate, and you're entitled to your opinion, but you're being mor...

Re: Sal, what are the chances for a AEB-L spydie ?
I am not really sure how this whole AEB-L thing got started but from what I have seen from testing. One of the worst steels made as far as edge holding goes, below AUS-8 and BD-1 and all others people tend to complain about so it would be backtracking to before the 440C days as far as performance g...
