Re: Deep carry pocket clips
There seems to be a deep-seated human impulse to insist that other people don't or shouldn't want or need something we don't want or need.

Re: What were the biggest changes to your EDC habits in 2018?
Due to a job change, I started carrying knives with 2.5" or smaller blades. This was a huge reorientation for me. Previously I've always been a larger knife guy; when I started this job I didn't even own any knives that met the blade length restriction. Even my multitools all had blades longer ...

Re: Are we already feeling the effects?
Two or three reveals a year isn't really much different from seeing the new releases in the product guide and the mid-year update. If they were doing a separate reveal for every single new knife or sprint, that would be one thing, but if there're only going to have a handful of unveilings a year the...

Re: If you could resurrect one discontinued model what would it be?
There're quite a few discontinued models I'd like to see done as sprints, but the only one that I think really makes sense as a part of the ongoing lineup is the Slysz Bowie. (The only one that I'm interested in, I mean. There are probably others that make sense that just don't happen to be on my ra...

Re: Why Don't You Like Framelocks?
There are some individual knives that I've refused to carry precisely because of this concern. I used to have a beautiful little Al Mar Quicksilver -- elegant design, cut well, looked great, but the pivot was so loose that it would fall open when just held upside down, and it had a rivet rather than...

Another Nishijin sprint. The L'il Native or the Rhino would both be nice choices. I'm not sure how the Nishijin L'il Lum sold, though, so it might be a while before we see another one.

Re: Why Don't You Like Framelocks?
Precisely what I mean when I say it is a safety hazard. I think the safety hazard is carrying any knife -- at least any knife that doesn't lock closed -- loose in one's pack. Let me reiterate: my wife had a lockback open up in her purse. Others might get by without something like this happening, an...

Re: Why Don't You Like Framelocks?
I can get, for example, my Southard to open up, but it requires a really hard wrist snap. Hard enough that I'm still feeling it in my arm five minutes later. It definitely doesn't just pop open from being shaken. The PM2s are about the same -- they'll come open but it's not easy. The Positron comes ...

Re: Why Don't You Like Framelocks?
I concur and I will also add that frame locks and liner locks can fail under hard use as pointed out somewhat in #3. They can also open accidentally in your pocket or purse and cause serious injuries. All of this is well known but people keep demanding them. My wife nearly had her fingertip taken o...

Re: 2019 Knife Plans
Continue my search for the perfect EDC knife legal at my workplace (under 2.5" blades only). Continue my search for a workplace that doesn't have this restriction (hey, I know where my priorities are). Expected Spydie purchases include a Domino, a Dice, a Smock, a Shabaria, a VToku Meerkat, an...

Re: Models That Absolutely DESERVE Sprint Runs
The Meerkat just recently had a HAP40 sprint run that's still available at or below MAP, and one in VToku2 has been announced; that's probably why enthusiasm for another sprint is on the low side right now. I think it'd look great in Nishijin scales, but I doubt that we'll see it any time in the imm...

Re: Sprint Runs Of Old Models With Old Blade Steel?
ATS-34 (and its twin, 154CM) are still perfectly good, pretty well-balanced steels. You can certainly find modern super-steels that are better at some things than they are, but they have a nice combination of edge retention, toughness, sharpenability, and stainlessness. I still regularly carry some ...

Re: Is your interest in sharpening on the same level as your interest in knives?
I have a Sharpmaker (well, and some antique Pike whetstones I inherited from my father ... but they don't really count). I can touch up edges that have gotten a little dull, and put a basic working edge on the less wear-resistant steels. But I'm not terribly interested in sharpening as a hobby, and ...

Re: Do most of us need larger knives?
In all honesty, I use my EDC flashlight far more often than my knife. Considering how tiny, bright, light, and cheap AAA lights have gotten, having one on me just seems like a no-brainer.

Re: Opinions on VToku
If you like edge holding, VToku2 might fall short. How would you characterize its edge holding relative to other blade steels? Would you say it's most comparable to VG-10, or more like 440C, or more like AUS-8, or are none of these steels a really good comparison? I mean specifically in terms of ed...

Re: Opinions on VToku
There have been several threads on VToku's performance, and the consensus seems to be: extremely tough steel that's great for thin grinds; very easy to put a sharp edge on; but lower edge retention compared to other sprint steels (e.g., HAP40). I'm not sure what other steels I would compare its edge...

Re: A copper spyderco
The copper Flytanium scales patina very, very quickly. If the patina is what you're after, that's great, but if you prefer the shiny look then you'll be spending a lot of time polishing them up again. Also, they roughly double the weight of a standard PM2. It remains a very usable knife even with th...
