Re: K390 Caly?
LW caly 3.5 sounds awesome, LW caly 3.5 in k390 sounds incredible. I want one of the new LWs bad, but I'm kind of out of my para 3 phase for now. Was just thinking about a Sage, but a 3.5 Caly sounds like the ticket.

Bd1n = better version of 14c28n?
I was reflecting on how much I enjoy sharpening my knives in 14c28n, and the new para 3 in bd1n came to mind. I was wondering how similar they were, so I did a quick comparison on my knife steel app. The main differences are that bd1n has .3% more carbon 2% more chromium, and an addition of .5% moly...

I'd like another crack at this steel. Another run of these, or maybe a Stretch 2?

Re: My Native 5 Maxamet
Great knife. Maxamet polishes up very nicely if you want to go that route. You may lose a little performance, but it should still outcut everything else.

Re: Does anyone else wish for a standard scale color other than black?
Black is good. My fav is gray. Red and blue are nice. Green's not bad. Brown? Not a fan. Titanium is ok. Carbon fiber is ok, some I like better than others depending on how it's done.

Re: Where's the 3V?
Really surprised by the arguments against 3v here. You don't hear these arguments used against any other steel. "You don't need x because y is better for folders." I understand if this was a poll and we could only choose one, but it's not. And maybe if there was something that was a strict...

AEB-L at 62-64? Would they dare? I'd have to buy if they announced that hardness. Made me preorder a REX45 Para 3 when Sal announced it was averaging 66. My only preorder to date, couldn't miss it.

P.s light gray g10 or dark gray would be fine. Not sure of dark gray is reserved for maxamet now or what.

I'd really like my Cruwear Native 5 in g10. I own 2 lw native 5s, 0 g10. Linerless g10? I'd be happy with any configuration really.

Re: Let's get some SRS-15 steel on some FRN This Year!
This family of steels BBB listed, at fairly high hardness, may be the best all around blade steel, depending on how much you value corrosion resistance. I value it right around zero, so I love these. I also enjoy the crazy wear resistance steels, but if I'm being practical, I think these may be bett...

Re: Do Super Steel Alloys End Carbon Steel's Reign for Knives or not?
I think blade steel still has a lot of room to grow and evolve. I think the recent push for super steels has been a great thing, but I think we're still figuring out what the optimal blade steel, or blade steel characteristics might be. Keep in mind very steels were actually developed for knives. If...

Re: CPM REX 86
I sharpen stone in hand similar to Michael Christy if you're familiar. I mixed things up a little with the progression this time. Edge was untouched from last sharpening so I just started on a fine dmt (usually would apex with a coarse dmt), then went to a 1k gritomatic Silicon Carbide, then an extr...

Re: CPM REX 86
This thread needs to die, but I did want to state for the record that my latest Maxamet sharpening was a success. It went pretty **** easily actually, and my earlier failings were due to a little flaw that popped up in my technique over the last month or so. I got that corrected, and Maxamet is good...

Re: CPM REX 86
Yes indeed. But now that I think about it, I've heard of HAP40 kitchen knives with higher HRCs, so it must be possible. Sal, if you read this, any reason HAP40 can't be heat treated the same as REX45? And thank you Meat man. I'm just going to keep focusing on better technique. If it turns out well I...

Re: CPM REX 86
If only it was available. T15 will have to do. You can call the boys at Niagara Specialty Metals with a list and ask what steels are actually available in barstock sizes for knives and you'll see the reality that a lot of these steels aren't available, some are only in round bar. Good to know, than...

Carbon: 2% Chromium: 4% Molybdenum: 5% Vanadium: 5% Tungsten: 10% Cobalt: 9% Working hardness up to 68-70 HRC. I need this steel in my life. Seems to me it falls somewhere in between REX45 and Maxamet. I like what that means for the wear resistance/edge stability/toughness/ease of sharpening spectru...

Freehand sharpening has been the most enthralling, most challenging, most rewarding thing I've ever learned to do.
