Re: Let's get hyped for the Amalgam!

I had to say goodbye to the production sample today, sent it back to Spyderco so it can make it to the collector's meet. It was really hard to part with the sample :o One last picture for now. Tried it out for some light usage at dinner celebrating Valentine's (don't worry, I stacked the meat to cut...

Re: Spyderco Ultratech Blade Division Proposal

And I thought this was gonna be about Tarantula or whatever other names have been floating around for a luxury/performance division of Spyderco, like Lexus is to Toyota or Acura is to Honda :D .

Re: Let's get hyped for the Amalgam!

Thanks guys for the feedback :) Updated the first post with the information we have so far! Thanks for managing this thread! Looks like pricing info came out quicker than I expected. BladeHQ must know something I don't :p Re: choil and the Brouwer (what a beautiful design by the way, I wish I had co...

Re: Let's get hyped for the Amalgam!

Yeah, but you didn't show detent free flipper action against gravity with weak hand using the light switch technique. You better send that to me for some more detailed evaluation.... Just kidding, of course! Action looks great! Looking forward to getting my hands on this knife! David I knew I was f...

Re: Let's get hyped for the Amalgam!

Thanks for the feedback re: blade length, blade shape, and usage. These are all good points and good for my personal reference. In my personal usage, I've been carrying a roughly 3.5 inch blade for my EDC but find slightly longer blades more enjoyable to use. Surfingringo, thanks for your input! You...

Re: Let's get hyped for the Amalgam!

@curlyhairedboy, here's a new video, showing compression lock manipulation in different ways, opening action pushbutton and lightswitch style with various methods with both hands, and detent-free flipper action against gravity with my weak hand for good measure haha. https://youtu.be/zjnJNNE4F6U As ...

Re: Let's get hyped for the Amalgam!

For those of you for whom the Amalgam is too large, what's a good size for a knife for you? The Amalgam hovers right around a 3.8" blade. I currently carry a 3.5" blade, and used to carry a 3.25" blade. I understand some require under 3" for certain jurisdictions, which is anothe...

Re: Let's get hyped for the Amalgam!

Flipping action and compression lock manipulation for those who are concerned with these aspects of the knife. I'm right handed and am able to easily manipulate the lock with either hand. I can also easily open the knife with the flipper using either hand. The action is nice, good enough that I can ...

Re: Quick 52100 patina setup

I think it's more that people want to protect against harmful brown rust or try to treat their blades so there is a more even layer of oxidization, not necessarily that they're trying to make a knife look used and antiquated. Taken to an extreme, does that mean that stone washing (pre-scratched!) or...

I like the compression lock. I'm right handed and have been able to close it easily right or left handed.

I'd just use it and see if it still cuts, then gauge where to start from there. Very scientific like ;)

Re: What's your favorite steel?

I haven't had the pleasure of trying S110V yet, but I don't find 20CV/M390 difficult to sharpen. I like 20CV/M390 and S30V quite a bit, but prefer the edges I can get on 20CV.

Re: Non-Stainless Steel Blades, WHY?

Yes M390, 20CV and 204P are all the same steel formulation but different brand names basically. This is a great steel +1. I really like this steel. This and S30V have been the main steels I've EDC'ed. But then again, I'm a folder guy and have no experienced with fixed blades other than in the kitch...

Re: Let's get hyped for the Amalgam!

Thanks hambone56rx! And nice observation ;) Yes, the flipper geometry and location relative to the pivot was on the original design submission. This was indeed to try to achieve a better flipping action. I would not be surprised if the flippers on the other designs were also designed that way for be...

Re: Let's get hyped for the Amalgam!

Believe me, I am so tempted to just throw it in my pocket and start using the heck out of it. But as it stands, this still needs to look presentable. I'm hoping Wouter will take some nice pictures of it at the Amsterdam meet. Daddy needs a new computer wallpaper :D :D :D
