Re: MT40P – HIC Mule Team Dropping Soon!

Well, I have always viewed the mule team project as a unique way to participate in some "cutting edge" knife stuff (pardon the awful pun). I was happy to get one of these HIC blades as part of my education no matter how it all turned out. I guess they are all kinds of different ways to vie...

Re: MT40P – HIC Mule Team Dropping Soon!

I ran home from work to place an order only to realize I was an hour early! Doh! Left and came back 15 minutes to release. Cart ready with a set of scales. Five minutes from release, my internet service goes down. Doh! Reset router...no dice. Release + 10 minutes, Plan B used phone connection. Slow...

Re: You got your Ceramic Mule. How you gonna sharpen it?

I bought this in preparation of this mule: https://i.imgur.com/wQdn6HN.jpg I'll start out with this (if there is any chips) and then work down to the diamond or CBN triangles or the CBN plates. Just realized that my Hapstone will be useless with it's magnetic base :rofl You aren't serious are you? ...

Re: MT40P – HIC Mule Team Dropping Soon!

I never saw any actual timeouts, but each "form submission" had about a 25 second wait before it launched the next part of the process. It pays to have gone through this on other drops to know what to expect and to -- above all -- Just be patient.

Re: MT40P – HIC Mule Team Dropping Soon!

Went through in 7 minutes. Long waits at each stage and a couple screw ups along the way on my part (like not logging in first) but I see the order complete and really this had less drama than other "drops" that I can remember. Pretty smooth. I decided that 1 was enough. So I'll actually b...

Re: MT40P – HIC Mule Team Dropping Soon!

I have NO idea how this will work out as a knife. But I am certainly curious and will go for 1 just to find out. Maybe 2 depending on my mood and how I feel at the time about spending that much $$$. Not exactly pocket change for me anyway. But I think it is really cool that Spyderco is doing this. I...

Re: Why don't you Baton?

Batoning is good to know about as yet another technique to file away in your bag of tricks. And for sure, doing it with care using a mule is entirely reasonable. Done with pieces of wood that don't require twisting or prying action to make the split would seem like good guidelines. Another thought I...

Re: Why don't you Baton?

Hi Tom, I guess one of the advantages of getting old (there aren't many) is learning stuff and getting to teach it to others. sal Hi Sal, I hope you are doing well. I'm not sure sometimes if I am getting wise or getting "soft". Here is a story along those lines. My son got a great deal on...

Re: Why don't you Baton?

I have built countless fires and never done any batoning. Part of this is a workman's sense of knowing the limits of his tools and getting the job done without abusing them. So if you never baton how are you so confident whether it is or isn't within the tools capability? I think is is common sense...

Re: Why don't you Baton?

Well, it is funny. I have built countless fires and never done any batoning. Nor do I carry a hatchet, certainly not backpacking. In places where there is wood for a fire, there is endless small wood (twigs and finger diameter material), so I just gather those up and start the fire with them. In rai...

Re: Hitachi White Steel

This sounds like a very interesting steel. I am certainly in if this ever comes to pass. I find the comparisons to 1095 interesting. I have enjoyed simple carbon steels that respond well to sharpening. The comments about AEB-L are also very interesting -- people calling it a sleeper and statements t...

Re: Look what I got my hands on !

"Are you gonna use it?", he asks! Well, I guess that is a fair question, but it would be a foregone conclusion with me and the answer would be "of course". This is very cool on at least two counts. One is 52100, which has always been a favorite steel of mine. The other of course ...

Re: MT36P – K294 MICROCLEAN Mule Team Dropping Soon!

Well, this is certainly nice. I come lazily along a week after the drop date and find this still available. So I just ordered two. The PMA11 mule was always one of my favorites and I have mine handy at all times -- in fact here it is right now! So I will be happy to have these. Yes it is crazy to ha...

Re: MT34P – CPM REX T15 Mule Team Dropping Soon!

Well it all went very nicely. I was able to order 2 and even at 8:05 the website was snappy. I just worry that this might mean that interest was low and Spyderco will be annoyed at having mule team inventory for longer than they might like. I hope not. Given the increased limit I pondered ordering 3...

Re: MT39P – CPM 15V Mule Team Dropping Soon!

Jeez, update your site, Spyderco. Put all the shipping options, payment info, etc. on one page. I feel like it's 1998 and I'm on dial-up watching the page load haha Believe it or not, that's by design. Having a multi-page checkout helps to prevent purchases from bots. Sadly, bots do exist, and with...

Made it. 11 minutes start to finish. Clearly a busy sale and in demand (though I see them still in stock at 8:30).

I am glad to see it busy. Good for Spyderco and good for the mule team project.

Re: MT37P - AEB-L Mule Team Dropping Soon

I do a little bit of cooking. Whenever I try a new recipe, I expect the first (or even second) trial to be not so good, but a necessary learning step to figure out how to make what I really want. As I gain experience I am able to produce something good much more often on the first trial -- but you g...

Re: MT37P - AEB-L Mule Team Dropping Soon

This steel has me right away thinking about 52100, which is one of my favorite steels of all time. And I read that some people call AEB-L "stainless 52100". So I am totally OK with it not having fantastic edge retention if it has some of the properties I admire in 52100. I have especially ...
