Re: Toughness and its effect on grind, performance, and edge

.... on what kind of steels (given good ht) for intended tasks The issue is however off set by consumers in terms of practical application unfortunately. If for example you want to find someone who uses say CTS-XHP and does a decent hardening then this isn't that difficult to track down and you sho...

Re: Toughness and its effect on grind, performance, and edge

Thanks Kristi. I try to stay neutral and yak about ideas/concepts, with hope to provide some ;) entertainment and optimistically small contribution. The rest of the time just lurk & learn a lot. bluntcut, Our apologies - you did not enter into an artillery zone although it may seem that way some...

Re: Toughness and its effect on grind, performance, and edge

1 - no, from a logical viewpoint, any protruded cutting edge with cross section thinner than critical value, where insufficient matrix supporting cutting bits (carbides). Those bits will tear out. Teeth without strong gum support will readily fall out when encounter higher than yield bond. Underlyin...

Re: Toughness and its effect on grind, performance, and edge

I pointed out - in my post - 12dps is about the lower cutting edge angle threshold for M4 regardless thickness behind the edge. Silly me to wander into an artillery zone. If you whittle fish 1/8 rib bone (or dry bamboo) with initial thicker edge and gradually goes thinner until roll or chip, that te...

Re: Toughness and its effect on grind, performance, and edge

If you whittle fish 1/8 rib bone (or dry bamboo) with initial thicker edge and gradually goes thinner until roll or chip, that tell you the zone where the edge is stable for your worse usage case. This stability requires matrix has sufficient strength & toughness combination to sustain lateral &...
