Re: The Catcherman as a filet knife?

HI Warnstein A shorter blade can be used to fillet a larger fish by cutting down the lateral line and filleting (peeling) the upper and lower loins off toward the back and belly. A longer blade with some flex allows it to better follow perpendicular to the back bone as you push down and flex. The fl...

Re: The Story of Knife Steel – Innovators Behind Modern Damascus and Super Steels

I had a chance to review Larrin's book early on and highly recommend it to all who have an interest in the craft of knife making from all different aspects. Its pretty incredible to see Larrin go from a interested kid at my knife show table to a doctor in metallurgy, author, inventor of a new steel ...

Re: Bow River Modified

The divot was part of the original design and I sometimes use it on other designs as well. It is used to add additional retention with a kydex sheath. The sheath would have an --opposite-- to the divot dimple that snaps into the sheath when closed. The Bow River ended up with a nice leather sheath s...

Skeed, very nice fillet job, like a surgeon. I agree that is a beautiful fish and makes me want to move to Florida. Fish and Chips and a cold one to go with it. Phil

Re: CPM 15v Manix 2

15V I was fortunate to get a CPM 15V Maxus 2 to work with and over the next few months will use it in a daily way, working in the shop and carrying with me. I do have some observations I can make based on this initial use. This knife tested 65 Rockwell and an average of 0.024 behind the edge. The bl...

Re: What grit finish for a hunting/fishing knife?

BIGSTRETCH I have used the fine and medium Norton SC Crystolon stones to good result on CPM S90V. Diamond plates and the diamond and the CBN rods from Spyderco work very nice as well. Lately I have learned from BBB (Shawn) and obtained from him CBN and diamond vitrified stones that are very quick to...

Re: What grit finish for a hunting/fishing knife?

I like a courser edge with more bite. My testing on manila rope shows 320 600 to be in the range depending on what is cut. This range also maximizes the edge holding in my experience. Phil

Re: CPM 15v Manix 2

I like to think of blade steels fitting into criteria categories. 10v, 15V, 90V, and Maximet are in a category where long lasting edge holding is the primary requirement. Given that other mechanical factors are sometimes compromised. I think Shawn has explained that pretty well. Its all a balance an...

Re: Sprig Re-run

Interesting this should come up since I was thinking about the same thing. The "Sprig" was originally designed for CPM S90V and that category of high wear resistance blade steel. LC200n is covered in the Waterway for a high corrosion resistance outdoor application. I have made several Spri...

Re: CPM MagnaCut | Edge Performance

Hi Shawn, We test to try to predict the performance of a knife doing its work in the field. This can be hunting fishing (fillet), kitchen or just daily everyday carry. We strive to find the ideal combination of steel grade, heat treating, hardness, geometry, sharpening, durability corrosion resistan...

Use the orange pumice hand cleaner and a tooth brush for both handle and blade. I have found that that works best for getting the gunk off after field dressing game and fish cleaning work. Phil

Re: Cliff Stamp has passed away

I sent knives to Cliff for testing and he was always honestly critical and approached his work from a standpoint of the scientific method. I appreciated his feed back even though I held my breath sometimes anticipating what he would report. HIs contribution to our craft will be missed. Thanks Cliff-...

Re: New CPM Stainless Steel??

I was fortunate to get a sample and did report my testing to Larrin. I looks like with the high toughness and corrosion resistance it will have great application across the board but especially for fillet knives and kitchen knives and bird and trout. I can't wait to try some out in the salt water. E...

Re: Rex 121

I think Obstinate, Pretty much covers it Sal. It is like 3 or 4 times the effort to grind out and finish a blade as say 10V. It holds an edge longer than anything else I have tried but has the lowest toughness of any knife steels I have worked with. Larrin's graphs show those two extremes. Corrosion...

Re: I Tested the Edge Retention of 48 Steels

We got a peak at the initial toughness and corrosion resistance of Larrin's invention ( I call it LT1). Those numbers look very, very good. The last piece, wear resistance I am sure will be good news as well. Thanks for your work Shawn, that all takes time and effort away from your own time at the g...

Hi Pancake, the knife in the photo with the veggies is actually a South Fork. Hard to see it has a rounded butt and the angle makes the blade look longer than actual. The Coyote Meadow is a trailing point but with a stick tang stacked handle and machined brass finger guard. Phil

Re: Book on metallurgy and knifemaking by Larrin Thomas

It took a while to get it and take a quick look but Larrin's book is now on the shelf right next to "Tool Steels" which was pretty much the reference most makers interested in heat treating their own blades. It is also now a text book for students and practicing metallurgists. Larrin's boo...

Re: 2020 SouthFork Sprint Poll

I guess it is time that I weigh in on the idea of a sprint run on the South Fork. Acording to Sal it was a very expensive knife to make. That is a big chunk of CPM S90v and that stuff back then at least was a bear to machine. It is still a lot of machining even with a different steel. CPM S90V is mo...
