Re: Janky grind on K390 Delica Wharncliffe

One way to break knife buyers into two categories is this: those who are comfortable sharpening their knives and those who aren’t. Another way is this: those who use knives and primarily value function versus those who admire knives and primarily value features/appearance. As Sal says, “All good, ju...

Re: Delica 4 in 2024?

I look forward to the Delica and Endura serrated VG-10 models moving to FFG like the Endela. I don’t know why that hasn’t happened yet, but hope it happens in the future.

Re: Put a Spydie hole in it

Hey Al, Actually, sharpening is going to be a group effort as to what will be the best way to get the best edge. I'm betting that this group will provide a good edge-u-cation on how to get this beast sharp. We're using diamond belts at the factory and it's a real PITA. At home, I've been using the ...

Re: Sharpmaker Elite Edition

I voted yes. I’ve toyed at times with the idea of making my own adjustable base for the SM rods, but it just doesn’t matter enough to make the effort. I can freehand sharpen pretty well, and bought a Galley Vee for the 10 dps geometry.

Re: Delica 4 in 2024?

Fun fact, if you clean your VG-10 Delica 4 blade and angle it in the light just right. You can see the chromium carbide banding flowing parallel with the blade. https://i.imgur.com/33JOrDg.jpeg I always wondered what caused that shimmer in VG-10. Thank you! I add my hearty voice to the chorus prais...

Re: What Spyderco Knife Has Surprised You the Most and Why

For me it was the Endela. It’s everything I love about the Delica lightweight in a slightly bigger package. The ergonomics are great and the FFG SE blade came with the best Spyderedge I’ve ever owned. VG-10 works great in thin SE. In fact, the Endela hits the sweet spot I saw in the original Mantra ...

Re: Does anyone know how to cut brown Sharpmaker rods cleanly?

Diamond-bladed tile or rock saw will cleanly cut Sharpmaker rods. Feed slowly with water coolant. Thank you Bill - that is very helpful. I believe we have a mitre-type tile saw with coolant feed in the workshop. Roughly what RPMs do I want to be spinning it at? I’m guessing just enough to cut witho...

Re: Getting Full Value from Your Blade Length

Excuse my ignorance, but what the heck is a sharpening choil? I know where the choil is on a knife. And I am aware of a finger choil, usually with jimping. But when ya'll are referencing a sharpening choil, are you specifying the blunt choil section between the sharp edge and the handle? And if so,...

Re: Ok, could it be that LC200N fares better against Magnacut than some might think?

What edge angle would you folks think of as the theoretical limit for LC200n? I entertain the idea to go as low as sensible with my UKPK Salt... My SE Caribbean is at around 20 degrees inclusive, 15 on the scallops and 5 on the flat side. I don’t consider that the limit, but it holds up well in my ...

Re: A review of the SE and PE Magnacut blades and how Spy27 measures up

I thought tensile strength was pulling on opposite ends of a material until it separated. To wit, my budget, being pulled on one end by my wife and the other end by my daughter, has low tensile strength and funds separate easily from my wallet. Whereas the Charpy is basically cracking/fracturing a ...

Re: A review of the SE and PE Magnacut blades and how Spy27 measures up

MC has better edge holding and LC better toughness - which could potentially be used for even steeper edge angles in LC ? And that would enhance edge holding of LC? May not nescessarily translate to better edge performance. Especially if it rolls faster than MC would chip or break down. LC's hardne...

Can you imagine a polished edge
on a blade that dark. I know it won't happen due to functionality but it sure would look awesome !
When the Cheshire Cat smiles and the whole cat becomes invisible except for the smile. That’s your polished edge, the cat’s smile all by itself.

Re: Buck 110 question

I have a 110 that was my late father’s. Never used, like many knives he accumulated. I respect the Buck 110 and its important place in knife history. They are beautiful to look at, but incredibly heavy to carry in pocket. The belt pouch is one good answer. I prefer to carry a Spyderco lightweight fo...

Compared to most, I am a sharpening novice. That said, isn't it recommended to use only the white stones on SE? It's really easy that way.
That only works if your edge never sees damage.

Spyderco keeping it classy, as normal for them. 👍 I had a similar issue years ago with Knifeworks. I had preordered two special CTS-204P PM2’s, and only received one. I contacted them and they made it right by sending the other one. No drama, just good customer service. I’ve bought a lot more from t...

Re: Deburring SE knives

Lighter force on the rods will help, as will staying on the coarse rods longer to completely finish their job. I de-burr the back side at about 5 degrees to the primary grind of the back, using edge-leading strokes. Pressing too hard, especially on fine/UF rods, will cause plastic deformation at the...

Re: SE performance is more than simply teeth vs no teeth.

I finished profiling my K390 Endura scallops at 15 degrees about a week ago, then refined it on the brown rods. It is now a hungry blade. While the serrations on my VG-10 Endela became very rounded by this same reprofiling process, the K390 responded very differently. From the back it’s hard to see ...
