Re: CPM REX 45 | Edge Performance
I got a repeatable reading of 66 HRC on my CPM Rex 45 Spyderco Military model. Happy with that number.

Re: CPM REX 45 | Edge Performance
I have access to a bench top HRC hardness tester. If I get around to taking my Rex 45 military apart I will share the info here. I’m hoping for 66-67 rc. I just got the knife and the factory edge is the sharpest I’ve ever seen out of any brand or model. I think this steel will take a killer keen edge.

Re: S30v vs s110v
I have used S30V for quite some time and have less experience with S110V but some. If both steels have upper range hardness and geometry alike, S110V should have higher strength, wear, edge holding but lower impact toughness then S30V. Edge stability is greater in lower carbide steels as long as the...

Re: Blade Geometry.
Yes, blade geometry is common sense to those that understand the geometry to begin with. If one doesn't know what .010" is over .040" there will be a problem. There is stock thickness, behind the edge measurement as well as blade height to be considered. Two blades, both are .100" thi...

Re: Edge retention slicing cardboard (15 dps, x-coarse DMT)
Cliff, I did some cutting tests on cardboard and got micro chips on an edge. The second and third time I tested on cardboard there were no ussues. I believe cardboard can have some hard debree in it. I can see the variances from type to type. Manila and sisal natural ropes can have "dirty"...

What makes a knife my "favorite" would be, cutting ability, edge holding and ergonomics.

Re: Does Spyderco use, or have any plans to use, cpm154?
CPM 154 is a good steel. I use it in the 61-62 rc range. Well rounded high carbon stainless. Not quite as aggressive cutting nature as high vanadium steels but no slouch overall!

Re: Let's talk about the upcoming phil wilson b&t (sprig)
Edge-e, I normally form the first edge with a wet Silicon Carbide belt (320 or 220) on the grinder at very slow speed. Then to the stone to get it cutting clean and even and then dull the edge on the stone. Resharpen on a diamond plate or back to the SC stone. I use Windex on the stone and plate. P...

Re: Let's talk about the upcoming phil wilson b&t (sprig)
Back to the question of how Lance is sharpening this knife. He is experimenting with different abrasives and grits and has narrowed down to a range he is looking at. In general on my knives I like an aggressive edge for the range of uses they are intended. A range of 320 or so to 600 grit has worke...

Tuff.
I wonder what hrc hardness the cpm 3v on the new tuff folder will be at?
Does anyone have an idea..since it is a folder, and 3v is a tough steel to begin with, it would be nice to see at a high hardness for best edge retention..Maybe in the 65 range..? Just a thought.
