Delica 4, SS, SE. The doll packages were diabolical this year. Good thing I had my secret weapon! Good thing for my brother too. He kept borrowing it.

Japanese G10

After carrying and using my UKPK, Manix2, and Para1 extensively for the last year, I have noticed that the G10 on these knives quickly develops a "soft", old bluejeans-like feel. I have not noted this change in my G10 Caly3, which I have had for about the same amount of time, but probably ...

Bolstered. Better still would be a barehead design with front bolster only. More bone (cf, wood, etc.) to love.

I believe the action on the Persian models is intentionally stiff, per Ed Schempp's preference. There was a thread to that effect a while back. The original mini Persian was very stiff, but it loosened with many :) openings.

How about a UKPara?

My dream spydie would be a mating of the UKPK handle with a Para style clip point blade. I find the para just a little too big for EDC, but love the blade shape. Lock vs. slipjoint not an issue for me. I'll just carry a bigger knife if I will be using hard enough to need a lock. A back lock would wo...

Aside from the flat vs. saber grind, the shape of the Caly3/UKPK and Native blades are almost identical. They look very different because of the thumb ramp down to the thinner handle on the Caly vs. the spine flush to the thicker handle on the Native, but the actual cutting part of the blade is the ...

Almost exclusively :spyder: , with the exception of my Leatherman tools, which are a different species. I've tried and looked at other brands, but nothing else really excites me. I do have an Emerson Mini CQC-7, and a handful of others from way back, but the :spyder: s get the pocket time. I too wis...

UKPK vs. Carpet pad

Re-laying some carpet today in my basement after cleaning up a wet mess :( . On the whole, I'd say it looks pretty good for a newbie with no special equipment. I did have to reshape the carpet a little around a funny shaped doorway. I would like to report that the UKPK leaf blade sliced through carp...

I find SS a bit too heavy & slippery and I prefer the light, grippy feel of G10 or other scale materials. To be honest I winced a bit when I heard of a Delica being used as a hammer and pry-bar and I'd say it's a fair thing to do if you are in a survival situation but if you can carry a separat...

How does G10 stand up to misuse?

One of the things I love about my SS Delica is that the handle is a great prybar and impact tool. Yesterday, a drawer in a metal storage locker jammed, and I was able to easily pry it open with the closed Delica. When the clip on my dog's chain freezes in winter, I pound on it with the knife handle ...

I completely agree with keeping the "value priced" blades in the Byrd line. They are great knives. I carried a G10 Cara Cara for awhile that locked up solid and had very good fit and finish. But the Spyderco name means high end, high quality, and as a result, high price. I love that the co...
