I personally don't use them. I can see how they might be useful to retrieve a knife but I'm yet to experiment with that. I would never use a lanyard to extend the grip area... That sounds a lot like a TRM Shadow to me although I've never had the chance to handle one.

The Chaparral is one of my favorites. If it is being updated can I suggest removing the jimping? The thin blade of the Chaparral makes it feel more aggressive than other knives and the excellent shape of the handle combined with the intended lighter use of this knife make it unnecessary. I.M.O. the Sharpmaker is only for applying a micro bevel. To do this all it needs is the 40 degree setting (or 30 preferred if the edge is <15dps). The aim of the sharpmaker isn't to match the existing edge exactly or reprofiling. I see the sharpmaker as a compliment to a fixed angle sharpener not a...
