Re: K390 vs S110V - Some Observations
I’ve used and sharpened both of these pretty extensively K390 is a clear winner in the sharpening department. Things like reprofiling take a minute but after that, it’s all good. I’ve never had a major issue getting a screaming sharp edge S110V is similarly difficult to reprofile…but it also takes ...

I just stare into the knife drawer until I'm about to be late for work.

Re: GP knives Manix exclusive
Love M4, love REX45... K390 is the only steel I've used that was a noticeable improvement over these for fine edge holding, while retaining a similar feel in use and on the stones. I'm no scientist or survivalist BTW, so don't pretend I have data or a cool story to back that up :) I've beat the cra...

Re: GP knives Manix exclusive
My experience is it falls somewhere between M4 and k390, it has significantly more edge strength than M4. It also takes a screaming fine edge. Feels like Maxamet on diamond plates, very glassy.

Re: New Tenacious Frame Lock in D2?
I saw this and am excited. All of my experience with Chinese d2 is that it holds a much better working edge than even the best AUS 8 and 8cr13mov. AUS 8 and 8cr hold a special place in my heart because I owned and used so many great knives on them but the reality is in 2024 compared to everything el...

Speak for yourself, 4v is an amazing steel and almost impossible to find in regular production knives.

Re: 2023 - Did your preferences change or stay the same?
2023 was a big knife year for me, as in late 2022 I rekindled my knife hobby. The biggest thing for me is I really took a liking to Spyderco, previously my only spyderco was a Resilience. The other thing that changed was what I wanted out of a steel, I no longer care about corrosion resistance, and ...

Maxamet sharpening is no joke.
Well it was finally time to sharpen the Sage 1 in Maxamet, it wasn't even that dull, just snagging a bit on paper. Even with DMT extra coarse, I spent near 4 hours getting a sharpish knife back to razor sharp, I wish someone would invent an abrasive harder than diamonds, because it almost feels like...

Re: Folding Prybar
These fancy prybars sure do look cool, but I'm not willing to sacrifice pocket space for something of limited utility. My two favorite prybars are about five feet and six feet and weigh about twenty pounds. If Sal can invent something that can do the same job and will fit in my pocket, I'll be all ...

Re: Knife trends you just don't understand?
1. Fidgeting with a knife. I grew out of my fidget phase in middle school. I don't understand the appeal of opening and closing a knife repeatedly unless you're trying to break in a new knife. 2. Sharpening choils. The reason they seem utterly nonsensical to me is simple. If you measure the heel of...

Re: Community Sharpening Journal
I carried my S35VN Tenacious all of last week, and man do I like that knife. A few months back, I plunged it through some sheet metal exhaust ducting, and took a few chips out of the edge. Rather than sharpen them out entirely, I decided to let it ride. Took it down to 15° on the CBN rods and left ...
