Re: A ''big'' question and challenge for Sal and Spyderco
Aside from a few outliers, I think most Spyderco’s have a BTE thickness of 0.015 to 0.025in. There is BTE database thread, which has a fairly good sample size. https://forum.spyderco.com/viewtopic.php?f=2&t=73097 When it comes to edge bevels me BTE thickness, I would say that Spyderco is current...

Re: Speculative 2022 Discontinued List Discussion Thread
The whole intention in doing the original Serrata was using investment casting for the steel. Another steel was not considered, and David Boye had proved that cast 440C was cutting like it did because of the dendrites. Using a cold or hot rolled steel would mean that it is just a Serrata shaped kni...

Re: Speculative 2022 Discontinued List Discussion Thread
The cast 440c was interesting, but I would like to see the Serrata come back in a tougher steel.

Re: Poll... Crucarta ...Poll
I think both CPM Cruwear and and Micarta have been somewhat underutilized by Spyderco, but they don’t necessarily need to go together. They could have just made regular production runs, rather than playing games with crucarta sprints. There is really no other reason to associate Cruwear and Micarta....

Re: New Knife Steel Ratings by Knife Steel Nerds
. Wish H1 was included like others in the corrosion resistant 10 rating: LC200N and Vanax. I have some knives in H1 and LC200N but not Vanax yet. Same here. H1 doesn't get much coverage from him. Larrin wrote a very comprehensive article on H1. It would get a 10 rating for corrosion resistance (no ...

Re: New Knife Steel Ratings by Knife Steel Nerds
Looking at Larrin's article, a few things jump out at me: ... Larrin's tables do not include hardness. I think your conclusions might change, when you consider hardness (resistance to deformation/rolling). People value M4, 4V, Cruwear, and Magnacut because of the relatively high toughness at high a...

Re: Blade Length to Weight Ratios
Does the ratio between blade length and weight play into your decision to purchase a knife or not? - No. Blade length and weight are considered, but independently. It is comfortable to be carried in a pocket? Is the blade long enough to accomplish the tasks I need it to accomplish? How about carryin...

If you really care about the details, skip the ratings and look at the actual data that the ratings are based on.

Re: CPM REX 45 | Edge Performance
I am! It was a comment on how fickle we are. I do look forward to trying Rex45 but you can see that reputations hang on a thread in the frenzied world of the internet. I've never met a bad steel in a Spyderco or had trouble with chipping - even with zdp189 and S110v. Sorry to give everyone a scare....

Re: New Knife Steel Ratings by Knife Steel Nerds
Well put and agreed. Some people on this forum act like REX45 is garbage steel on here. Well I have a Native Chief that has still yet to need sharpening from EDC use Involving cutting branches and breaking down cardboard boxes. But I don't use my folders to stab steel drums or baton oak logs anyway...

Re: CPM REX 45 | Edge Performance
I am going to necro this thread. Hopefully, this will prompt others to provide their preferred edge geometry and finish for REX45 and possibly provide some feedback to Spyderco regarding the heat treatment. I reprofiled the edge bevel to 15 dps. I finished sharpening on a 800 grit diamond stone and ...

Re: New Knife Steel Ratings by Knife Steel Nerds
As far as I know (just what I heard) HAP 40 is run "softer" than REX 45 indeed. They say HAP 40can´t be as hard due to the cladding with SUS410 (again, just repeating what I read). Now, from what you say, being a bit softer could actually be an advantage. Still: My REX 45 Manix LW seems t...

Re: New Knife Steel Ratings by Knife Steel Nerds
I am - again - surprised how relatively "bad" REX45/HAP 40 fares. Especially how really not spectacular its toughness actually is. Of course I don't doubt the results at all (!), but this is different to what - also experienced - knife users always tend to say and also different to my own...

Re: Which knife later grew on you?
In my experience, you tend to like a knife more once you learn how to get the most out of it. For example: - I learned to like the Spydiechef more after I stopped trying to use it in a saber grip. Once I started almost excusively using a pinch grip, it was much more enjoyable to use. - I learned to ...

Re: Sal, why is ZDP-189 being phased out in favor of K390?
No complaints from me at ZDP being phased out... Have owned it in a Delica (twice), a Caly 3, Caly 3.5, and a Ladybug. Sold all of them. It's non-stainless enough to spot after cutting up fruit if not cleaned relatively soon after, and while it cut for a while with a relatively polished edge it was...

Re: Best Spyderco for whittling?
What edge angles do people prefer for whittling? I reprofiled my Native 5 to 14 degrees per side, and I find it hard to change the direction of the cut, when whittling.

I would be surprised if Spyderco actually has a QC requirement for where the plunge line hits the spine.
