Persistence - opening and closing hard and grity

    Hi all,

I have my Spyderco Persistence for about 2-3 months and opening and closing is hard and there is a lot of friction between tang and the linerlock. I have flicked the knife a couple hundred times, tried putting some oil on the linerlock, loosened the pivot and still the same. Any ideas how to smoothen it?

Loosen the pivot screw, run under hot water and soap, dry, blow out with compressed air, tighten pivot.

I would add that it might help to open and close under the hot soapy water. Try to work out the grit with soap as a lubricant. Rinse clean, dry and lube. Just sharpened a coworkers Tenacious and feel no such issues here.

If you have no problems taking the knife apart, use a little metal polish like flitz, and polish both inside liners as well as around the pivot hole in the blade. Make sure the washers are clean and dry, lubricate everything, and put it back together. Mine starting getting gritty after a awhile and that worked wonders on mine.

I agree with what everyone said especially this if you want to. You could send it to Spyderco but I doubt if it's a problem that the warranty would cover. I also would be surprised if they charged you for cleaning it which is probably all that is needed. I don't think you need to send it to them but if you do you will know there is nothing wrong with it. Knowing there is nothing wrong with the knife makes the decision to take it apart easier. Liner locks are possibly the easiest to reassemble of all the locks. I don't have much experience but have taken a few liner and back locks apart. Also the CBBL in the Manix2. Knowing how to take them apart for cleaning is a nice advantage. Also you get to see the inside of the knife/lock. After seeing the CBBL with the scale/liner off I knew how and why the lock is so secure. I also could see how and why it could fail. Being dirty is the only reason, making the lock not engage . These are pretty simple mechanical items as mechanical items go.

Even if you don't want to take it apart I'm sure a good cleaning will fix you up. Loosen the pivot quite a bit. Drown the pivot under the faucet. Spuirt some dish soap into the pivot and work the blade. When you rinse it and only clean water is coming out of the pivot use a hair dryer to dry it. Add a couple of drops of good oil and work the blade. Then tighten the pivot to your liking. I bet it will feel like a different knife.

Guys, I took it apart. It had three washers on one side and one on the other. I wiped everything with a paper towel, lubed everything with some sewing machine oil and put it back together. I put two washers on each side (wich further messed up the centering of the blade). Now its much smoother. Still creaks from the friction between the tang and ball detent, but its very usable. Thanks for your help!!
