I once took a butterfly knife away from someone. He was showing off, and was genuinely surprised when I simply reached down and took it from his hand. It was an El Cheapo, but looked rather nice. I handed it back to him, and we continued to hang out. Friends now, but back then just very mild acquaintances.

Determination to use a knife plays a huge role as to whether or not someone can hold onto it.

He definitely knows his stuff and is a realist on the topic. I'm about half way through Meditations On Violence myself

Basically what I said. He was leaving a bar one night and got jumped by several guys for whatever reason. He pulled a knife that he had and in the tussle they disarmed him and stabbed him several times in the leg. I don't honestly know the circumstances that led up to it happening. My point was that you can be disarmed, it not a fantasy, it can happen.

Sorry I didn't realize it was your father inlaw. That's scary stuff ;(

Whenever you get jumped, let alone by multiple assailants, your chances are NOT good. Trained or not, armed or swinging. He's lucky to be alive but I'm glad it ended relatively well.

    Ps: Chuck...HAHAHA!

Ya, also don't take your knife and hold it out in front of you like you're trying to hand it to them. Also, don't try to threaten someone with it or try to scare them off. If it is justified then go all out.

This thread makes me sad that the spot and the swick aren't normal catalog items. Those are virtually impossible to strip without removing a finger, and they're my sd fixies for that fact.

Fixed blades often fall into another legal bracket though. In that wasnt the case I'd (personally) rather have a Street Beat or Ronin just on ballistics. Same logic as the Yojimbo2 vs Kerambit.

There was a case locally last year of three people going to the ER in one day for stab wounds. After stories were put together it seems they all were sent there by one guy who seemingly was the "victim" of their combined efforts.

Still 3 (or 2) on one isn't Hollywood. It's real and quite deadly. Your odds are piss poor so make it count. Fast and fierce.

Glad your father in law is all right but getting jumped by multiple assailants is always a bad thing.

I agree. It's also an example of greater force than one guy with a knife disarming that guy with a knife. Greater force could also take the shape of one guy with a gun. Greater force usually takes the day unless other factors are present. Still, not rocket science.

Of course there are always exceptions that seem pretty unlikely. During testing of the A12/SR71 an aircraft going over mach 3 at almost 90,000 ft broke up in mid air. The pilots didn't eject, they were just tossed into the airstream. It should be a completely unsurvivable event according to what's known. One pilot actually survived. There have been people that fell from commercial airliners over 30,000 ft and 500 mph with no parachute that have survived.

Do these strange events change the likelihood of the next one happening the same way? Wouldn't think so.

I have not read that yet. That is next. I will say reading these books I'm thinking it would be best to stay on Mr Millers good side!
