    New to the forum

Hello everyone! This is my experience with a forum of any sort but as my addiction grows so does my quest for spyderco knowledge. I have a few question and hope a few can school me a bit. The first is has anyone used knifecenter to pre order before because I just did for the carbon fiber dodo. The reason I ask is after I did I see a lot of mixed reviews on old threads when I google that question. The second is I'm won seeing the best oil for my folders? I've heard a lot on this subject as well but not from an educated spyderco owner. Thanks ahead of time!! Eric

Hello, and welcome to the forum.

I don't know about knivecenter pre orders.

Lubrication is a subject that comes up from time to time. Most recently is someone asked about Nano-oil. Here is the thread:

    http://www.spyderco.com/forums/showt...no-Oil-for-Sal

I had just gotten a tube of it and it is really working well so far. The other day I took a knife apart, cleaned it really well, put a light coat of Tuf-Glide on the blade tang and metal parts and let it dry. As I reassembled the knife I applied Nano-oil to the pivot area making sure EVERY spot got lubricated. Now I'm going to use the knife and not add any lubrication until I see a need to. I mean a significant decrease in the ease of movement of the blade. I'll see how long one application lasts. If it performs like I hope and anticipate it will it will replace my "default" oil. As I think about it though this won't be much of a challenge for Nano-oil. The knife is a Gayle Bradley and one of the smoothest opening knives I've ever seen. I think I should try it on something not as smooth also. I'll think on that. It will be a Spyderco though. Hard to find a "not smooth" Spyderco though.

In addition to Nano I am a firm believer in Tuf-Glide and Tuf-cloth for corrosion protection and a pretty good lubricant. It is exceptional for corrosion control IMO and use it especially on knives with non-stainless steel blades. I have also used Quick Release oil which is an excellent lubricant IMO. There are lots of other great lubes out there and I'll let those who have used them comment.

If you read the forum rules you won't find any requirements for good sepllnig or grammar. Thank God (and Spyderco) for that.

Thank you for the response. I know im going to have a learning curve but I want it to be as. Oat effective as possible. I had to learn the hard way on a few things already. Nothing like buying 3 different thing to do the same thing.

Welcome to the forum. I have used KC with no problems for regular orders but I have not pre ordered there before. I have found most any good lube will work though everyone has a favorite or 3.
    Thanks,

    Welcome to the forum Eric!

As for pre-orders at KC: Some of the folks here have had success with that, but I've only tried it once and I ended up cancelling my pre-order because it seemed to be dragging on for too long. I will say, however, that the folks at KC are very responsive to e-mails and seem to be very willing to answer any questions regarding your order. Just food for thought.

I've had a few pre-orders with knifecenter. They are a good dealer, but not always the first to get sprints. I've had better luck waiting until the sprint comes out and see which dealers have stock.

Since the CF Dodo pre-order just recently went live, you should be fine. It's the people that order later on (after Knifecenter has taken waaayyyy to many preorders) that end up with the short end of the stick.

Lots of people swear by Tuf-Glide/-Cloth (I just started using it the other week), Miltec, Corrosion X, Ballistol, Renaissance Wax, Rem Oil, 3-in-1, and -for food safe needs- food grade mineral oil. Lots of choices, but good luck finding a consensus for which one is best. As mentioned above, the new kid on the block (Nano Oil) has been getting some buzz as well.

Welcome to the forums and I hope you enjoy your time here.

    Welcome to the Forum!

I preordered the Leatherman Super Tool 300 from the Knife Center. They appeared to get it in stock before other companies, and I got mine as soon as they had it. The Knife Center has been pretty reliable for me.

As far as oils for my knives go, I've been a fan of Hoppe's 9 oil. It's been good to my guns and knives. Of course, as noted above, there are many opinions on this topic.

I have not had much luck with KC on pre-orders - no matter the brand, or when I placed my order. Last year, I placed an order for the Yojimbo2 within the first week they went live, but I never received the knife. I now have a pre-order with CS. The same thing happened with the S35VN Para2 Sprint. This time I called and asked if they were at their order limit, and the nice customer service person said I would get a knife in the first shipment. Well, I never received that knife, and ended up purchasing two from NG (also for less $$). To prove that this is not a Spyderco issue, I had a pre-order for the new ZT 0560 Hinderer placed earlier this year, but cancelled that order after every other reputable dealer had received their shipments. Also, not a specific pre-order issue, but their prices are on the high side - you can find almost all of their knives for cheaper at top-quality dealers. For what it is worth, they have excellent customer service and cancelling orders is simple and painless.
For all of my Spyderco pre-orders I use Howes. I buy most my knives there, and his pre-order system prevents over-selling. Howes is my go-to site for all things Spyderco.
As for lubrication, I use the Sentry Solutions series of products. (a local company) The Tuf-Cloth is an excellent dry film corrosion inhibitor, and I use it on all of my folders and fixed blades - be they S30V, M4, or 1095 carbon steel. I use Tuf-Glide on all of my folders and just a small amount at the pivot keeps them opening smoothly for months.
I hope that this helps - and welcome to the forum!

    Welcome to the forum Eric.

I bought a lot of stuff from KC but never did a pre-order.

I use normal mineral oil meant for machinery for my knives and don't have any issues. Over here where I am, I don't have much choice.

That's gonna break my heart. I don't see the the carbon fiber dodo on howes anymore. I guess I'm gonna have to keep my fingers crossed and see if it pops back up on howes. Thanks everyone for the warm welcome and all the info.

    Welcome Eric!!

I have placed a couple of pre-orders with Knifecenter and have not had any problems.
They were for Sprint runs, which I think the Dodo is, as well.
