I talked to Sal, and he indicated that they don't plan on doing the mini fixed blades as mules, but that people kept mentioning it to him. One thing they're great at is being open to new things.

I'm very curious on the fixed blades. Good to see there might be three choices of blade styles. The Schempp Ladyfinger with hawkbill sounds interesting. The Firefly with carbon fiber bolster and orange G-10 looks like a must buy.

Seems like there's a lot of interest in the Firefly model. But the most important question has yet to be asked: Does it glow?

Funny you should ask, while I was at the table a gentleman I was standing next to asked Sal about using a glowing material for the Firefly but as of now there aren't any plans to use moonglow from what I gathered.

I worded the description of the Schempp Bowie prototype poorly. The scales are lightning strike carbon fiber and the bolster/guard may be bronze(can't quite recall the color). My invocation of rubber in describing the handle was trying to illustrate the bending of a coffin type handle into a more ergonomic shape.

Here's the obligatory picture of Eric & Sal. Along with Ed and lots of other folks it was a real pleasure to talk with them.

In the next picture are the Spydies I brought home from the show. I've mourned the loss of my Barongs, but now I have two and am particularly excited about the one with the Tom Krein treatment. I picked up a Spyderfly on Friday because the deal was too good to pass up. The next day I found two more at another table. The Rock Salt has an unused factory edge and was sitting amongst a bunch of old hunting knives. I met a young man who found a Forager in similar circumstances, having been tipped off by Dave (spyderwa) as to where to where it was. I'm already looking forward to next year.

$70 on a Rock Salt is criminal! You stole it!

Needless to say I did not try to negotiate a lower price.

Sounds very fun Sequimite . Truly appreciate the report and pics so we can vicariously live it through the web.

Maybe next year I'll see you all there!

Sal asked that we not take pictures of the knives.
His reasons for not allowing pics of prototypes was sound business I believe.
Kinda sucks but I totally get it.

Hopefully the small fixed blades will be screw together constructed. Very curious.

I'm interested in some "normal", small fixed blades, especially if they come with a sheath. Very curious.

Do these guys ever rest? So much new stuff to think about all the time.

    - best wishes, Jazz.

Gotta say that I'm pretty fired up about those small fixed blades as well.

My favorite knife at the OKCA show was the Firefly and I sure hope it goes into production. The orange G10 combined with the CF looked wicked!

While browsing some older Spyderco catalogs today, I noticed that the 1993 Catalog has a knife that Spyderco sold that was called the Hotaru, which is "Firefly" (ホタル) in Japanese. It was manufactured by G. Sakai and has a red LED in the rear. I sincerely hope that the new Firefly gets some sort of glowing upgrade before it comes out. If not, I guess I'll just have to mod it to fit it's namesake!

The small fixed blades were nice and will certainly be picking one up when they come out. They are just begging to be modified.

Hey Sequim, you beat me by minutes to that rock salt. I saw it on the first pass, and by the time my better half gave me permission, you had already gotten it.

Well played sir! At least I know it went to a good home now.

The table was definitely a mad house for the first 30 minutes or so.

I still hope Spyderco will come eventually with an updated Hotaru (I'd preffer something along the lines of the 1st Generation Navigator) with a LED light in the handles.
