OK MISSOURI Show Yourself

I've been on the Great Spyder Forum since Sept 2004 and at that time there weren't a lot of folks here from the Great State of MISSOURI ( pronounced misery )>> But here in the past 2 to 3 years I've talked to quite a few of my fellow Missourians.

For all you folks overseas the State of Missouri is located here in the good ol USA right smack in the middle of the continent. The 2 big cities are Kansas City where I'm currently living and the city of St. Louis home of those great World Champion Cardinals .

Missouri is getting to be quite the knife state I've noticed. Probably not as much as Arkansas but we are catching up fast. OK guys and gals from Missouri let's hear from you all. Make your presence known to those here at Spyderville and the rest of the globe

After living in St. Louis for 46 years, I traveled to my new home by truck and car three times and can therefore tell you that while Missouri is close to the population center of the US and is the gateway to the west; it is much closer to the Atlantic than the Pacific.

Ironically, it wasn't until I moved that I bought about fifty knives from Poorfish, which is perhaps two miles from my old house in Ellisville. The last custom I bought was made by John Lloyd who lives on Price Rd south of Olive. His house was on the paper route I had during my last two years of college at the University of Missouri - St. Louis.

I sure don't miss the climate but I do miss Missouri's 4" folder law.

Missouri is a very laxed state on knives and I can't tell you how many times during deer seasons I've gone into restuarants and other pubic establishments and business with fixed blades on my belt and no one says a thing about it. Missouri is even really decent on gun laws too>> most of the time if they know you are a legit hunter, targetshooter or just plain outdoorsman they pretty much just leave you alone. Because the outdoor sports are a huge part of our economy here in Missouri. We truly are a hunting and fishing paradise in many areas of the state >> particular in the Ozarks region and the Mark Twain National Forests which are very dear to my heart.

Deer hunting and fishing are almost religions is this state. And we are slowly introducing Spyders to the natives

I'm not entirely sure about the laws here on fixed blades, but i've seen quite a few guys carrying Bowies on their belts especially if they're in hunting gear. I really don't think you'd get hassled for it unless you did something stupid with it. Kentucky supposedly doesn't have a length law at all, it's left up to the officer to decide, which i guess can work for or against you. I've been EDC'ing a Military lately and i don't feel like i'm taking a risk. I'm still a little paranoid about carrying my Para 2 in Ohio where most counties have a 3 inch limit (some even smaller) but i try to stay low key and not break laws and do stupid stuff that would make it an issue.

I'm a SLU (Biliken) Saint Louis University Grad, was living in Saint Louis for 4 years when St Louis was the #1 city in America you would most probably get murdered in.....Not the case anymore thank god, that title was won by Charleston South Carolina this year. Back in the Day, thing were so rough, St Louis City Police did not carry nightsticks, but made there own clubs from furniture table legs....the only mod they made was to drill a lanyard hole in the wood....I tell ya those were wild times for sure at we had a shooting on campus at least one a week involving either campus security or City Police.....During my four year stay, I was held up at gunpoint twice, and shot at once.....other than that I had lots of fun there and miss the place........The only arches I get to see nowadays are the ones on McDonalds....Doc

Where did you get your info about county knife length limits, as I can only find O.R.C that states " any instrument, device, or thing capable of inflicting death, and designed or specifically adapted for Use as a weapon, or possessed, or use as a weapon." I know some cities have length limits but I have been unable to find anything on counties. I've always been told when asked what I use a knife that im carring for to say "cutting boxes" ect. Never claim its for self-defense.

I know the area well. Many of my relatives live in St. Charles and St. Peter just down the road from you. It's not a bad area at all. I know that they have a lot of Gun & Knife shows in the area as well. There was a guy named Mike Helm who used to put on Knife shows at St. Charles>> I lost touch with him and I don't know if he still does that or not. They were good shows and a lot of Missouri custom knifemakers would be there. OK I know that there are many more Missourians out there so please chime in.

I also live in O'Fallon. I've been here about 13 years, and I used to live in St. Peters, where I basically grew up. I'm both a knifaholic and flashaholic, but I'm much more into lights now that I've grown content with my Spydie collection.

I've only found a few. Middletown for example (South of Dayton) has a 2.5 inch limit. I guess "city" would have been a better word to use than county. And yes, a knife is never a weapon, never for self defense, always refer to it as a utility tool for work.

Doc, You are a pretty feisty guy now that has been disciplined through years of multiple martial arts,LE training, graduate schooling, life experiences, and a pretty strong will.

I've given some thought as to how ..uh,...energetic you were in your teens and early twenties. I somehow have this image of a Pecos Bill type larger than life type, but good natured.

Good to hear from you Brother>> I'll be visiting your great town at least 2 times this upcoming summer. I'll be going to the Current River in the Mark Twain National Forest this summer and I'll be going to A.G. Russell's knife show in July down in Arkansas.

I lived in Springfield for a short time back in the late 80s and I loved it there in Springfield. It's so close to many great vacation spots.

It seems like most of you Missourians here on the Forum are more from the east part of the state. I was hoping that maybe some of you were from the Mark Twain National Forests area in the southeast area of the state. There is a hidden vacation spot down there called "Big Spring" right out of Van Buren Missouri and it's the biggest freshwater spring in North America and probably one of the biggest springs in the entire planet. The water from that Spring is so delicious to drink and it's full of minerals. The Current River that it feeds is one of the most beautiful recreation rivers in the entire USA in my opinion. The wilderness area around it is truly a wonder.

I was also hoping to hear from folks in the rural areas of the state like up north of the Missouri River. Great Hunting and fishing in that area too. The suburbs of Kansas City where I spent most of my life are nice but the inner city is in serious decay. I know there are many more Misourians that haven't chimed in yet>> So tell us where you all are from.

Fort Leonard Wood and Whiteman Air Force Base are both extremely huge military installations here in Missouri. Whiteman is where they have a lot of the B-2 Stealth Bombers making their home. I have at least a dozen friends who spent a lot of their military time at Fort Leonard Wood. It's located in smack in the middle of the central Ozarks mountains. A very beautiful part of the state.

Hey my Brother of another Mother tell me who sells Spyderco in Springfield Missouri USA?

Also did all of you here in Spyderville know that the great outdoor store BASS PRO/ Outdoor World is headquartered in the town of Springfield Missouri? Well it's right there on Sunshine & Campbell streets in Springfield. Yep that's where they got their start. I've seen Spyders in that store before but I haven't seen them in the Bass Pro here close to me here by Independence Missouri.
