    I love the Sages and

to make them better, could we please have another (or optional) steel.

Yes, you could say I'm whining. I know S30v is super at edge holding. If you are in the bush for a few days or the day in the Gulf fishing a blade of S30V would be the thing to have. Of course I would use a Military or a Para(a larger knife).

The Sage is an EDC (for me) when it's on rotation it's on my waistband all the time. I like it crazy sharp as VG10 is, S30V just looses that quickly.

Could we perhaps have a taste of CPM M4? Hay, CPM 154 has that edge I like in an EDC, that would do nicely.

    Gave it a shot.

I kind of like the consistency of steel in the Sage series. It keeps the focus on the lock, and honoring the designer, rather than showcasing the latest super steel. Just my opinion.

I've thought about that myself. I just wasn't a big enough whiner to mention it. I'm glad they use S30V. I like it a lot. Having said that I like the idea of the chaparral knives having different steel. I am looking forward to the next one with XHP. But if they will keep the same steel I'm glad they chose S30V for the Sages. The Sage4 grows on me more each day.

I like that Spyderco keeps the Sage Series' blade steel consistent with S30V. I find it to be a fantastic steel in every category. And the Sage4 is one of the best all around knives I have ever owned.

Of course , if the Sage5 happen to come with a blade in M390 you wouldn't hear me complain one bit.

The Sage I has been around a long time and is a permanent fixture in the catalog. It's not a limited edition. I see nothing sacred here in the steel.

No telling why Spyderco selected S30V for the Sage series. I like the choice myself. I kind of figured it was because S30V is a very good super steel IMO but to keep the cost down (possibly) they didn't use one of the significantly more expensive steels that some consider to be better. Personally, I'd like to see another steel but am very happy with S30V. I'd much rather it be this than VG-10. VG-10 is good but it seems to me S30V keeps an edge longer, it's easy to sharpen also. IMO it's hard to beat the Sage1 and Sage2 as a GREAT EDC knife. Spyderco has a bunch that fit into that category but we all know that. I like the series concept. Sages are a great choice for this idea and the Chaparral will be one of the series models. Handle and blade steel is what will change on it instead of the lock. Very cool idea when you have a model that lots of people will like. I may like the CF Chaparral but not the TI model coming out soon, or vice versa. This way I can get either and have a great knife. I want both though. You never know, I may need to cut something twice in a day. That means I need two knives. All this is just my opinion though. Others may disagree but they are wrong. Joking of course.

Maybe someday after all the handle designs have come out, they'll do sprints of each knife again in a different steel. I almost bought a Sage II when i got my Military but it was pretty expensive.

That seems like a good guess. 99% of the people who talk about it like it. I've never had one but would love to try it on a sage.

Excellent excellent work. In case I forgot to say excellent, excellent.

    Great looking job.

Here is a thought. Have you been looking at the thread about a sharpening notch? Expecially Unit's video? Your 154CM blade is displaying the exact issue the notch solves. The bevel is a tiny bit wider about an inch or so from the heel of the blade edge. To begin with the bevel is wide, then it narrows, gets a little wider then is consistant for the rest of the blade. A sharpening notch (if you want one) makes it easy to maintain a consistant bevel width. Just a thought. It doesn't improve performance IMO.

    Again, great work.

On S30V, I think you've hit most of the likely suspects. It performs extremely well, is relatively affordable, and possibly most relevant, the Golden facility has very significant experience and expertise working with S30V, which keeps the knives in the Golden plant and keeps the costs reasonable. S30V is the Rodney Dangerfield of knife steels.

I assume you know the Sage knives are made in Taiwan. Are the blades made in CO? I've heard that happens sometimes when Spyderco wants a blade steel on a knife that isn't used when making blades in another country. The blade can be made somewhere then shipped to where the rest of the knife is made and assembled (or vice versa maybe). I know very little about this which is why I asked. I guess it's none of my business though. All I really care about is the finished product.
