POLL: White FRN handles: would you buy them so you can dye them?

I love my new stretch, but wish I had more color options. This has been mentioned before, but white would be great to dye to any color. Perhaps these poll results might make white become standard color.

Edit: As someone pointed out, I wasn't clear about the white FRN coming on a completed knife. Therefore, no scale swapping, just leaving in cheap RIT dye for a few minutes. I didn't know that dying frn voided the warranty. I remember hearing it did not. Any clarification is appreciated.

Edit2: Got some info on the warranty issue from here:

    http://www.spyderco.com/forums/showt...lding-up/page9

    to quote Jmanwit

"Well, two good things! I got a NIB White Dragonfly from a great guy on Bladeforums, and now I RIT'd it up! But NOT before I called Spyderco and talked to the Warranty dept. RIT dying DOES NOT void the warranty, as the knife is not taken apart to do it!"

Absolutely. It'll never happen though because swapping scales will void your warranty.

    *edit*

I thought you meant if they sold just white scales separately would i buy them. The answer is still yes, but i do think offering at least the Delica/Endura/Stretch in white would be awesome.

Have a white Dragonfly and have entertained the idea, but it's a sprint run. I would love to try dyeing another knife a different color or even try a 2 tone.

I wouldn't buy something just to dye it. But I'm not that into modding stuff.

Would depend on the model. There aren't too many FRN ones with midlocks and 50/50 choils. If they offered the Stretch in white FRN and VG-10, I'd be in for at least two. I'd also be in for at least one white FRN Native V in S30V, S35VN, or pretty much any US made stainless steel.

Yes, but it has always been my understanding that doing so voids the warranty so when I did it, I did it with that in mind. These 3 used to be white:

I would love a white FRN Option for all current production FRN knives. Dragonfly, Ladybug, Delica, Endura, Stretch, Native...etc. all would be great to allow user customizable color options. I would love a White G-10 version of some knives as well. Snow camo Millie or Urban camo Para. Just a thought!

+1 for white stretch. I'd pass on the dye though. They already have brg, blue and black. All pretty decent colors.

    A white glow-in-the-dark Assist!!

Ok, would be fun but a white Stretch in one of the newer Carpenter steels, maybe XHP, would be awesome.

Or a salt white H1 knife! White Tasman, sounds like a cocktail-some dangerous stuff!

These knives look awesome. They look like they came that color. I've only dyed a yellow salt 1 to dark green by exposing it to blue. It looks great and is tough as nails with no color fade.

Yeah, problem for me is that the non-black colors are more spendie and in a steel that is more difficult to sharpen.

Taken directly from their posted warranty:

"Spyderco’s warranty does not cover damage caused by abuse, misuse, loss, improper handling, alterations, accident, neglect, disassembly, or improper sharpening."

The knife is being altered from it's original, intended color.

It seems we are getting some conflicting info. I found an old thread and the guy called spyderco warranty dept. and they told him that if it is dyed without taking it apart then the warranty is intact. Please see the first post where I add an edit that shows the url for that conversation and a quote.

It comes down to how "altered" is defined by spyderco I suppose.

NOT trying to start a peeing match here at all, just trying to get to the bottom of this.

I would surmise there are too many variables for the warranty to remain intact. Possible heat treat issues to the blade, expansion & contraction of the FRN (causing loose pivots) due to dunking it in a pot of boiling water, etc. These are just my guesses and not fact.

An FYI for those afraid of frn + boiling water. I got one to dye well with water kept at around 100 to 120 F (upward limit of comfort for skin exposure basically). I was afraid of heat issues, so I decided to try it at a lower heat. It just took longer to take than most people report. To turn my yellow to a green using blue took about half an hour to an hour. I kept rinsing, checking, redunking every few minutes, took forever but at least I wasn't afraid of it getting too dark before I realized it.

I'd say it would depend more on Spyderco's evaluation of whether the warranty issue was caused by the dying, but realistically, virtually all legitimate warranty issues should be noticed before one gets to the point of dying the knife.

FWIW, boiling water can't damage heat treat. That particular bit of BS has been debunked many times.

I'm readying my boiling pots as we speak!

I wouldn't mind just having white too.

I would be interested in some white frn models. At this time I would have no intention of dying them but I might change my mind in the future.
