I like to know where my stuff is made. I actually think it's mandated or soon to be mandated by the Federal Trade Commission?

When we start traveling to different planets, "planet Earth" will be part of our address, then the country, down to the house. This is just another example of Spyderco planning ahead.

I could be wrong but I take it as a (gentle) nudge at "Buy American" types. I think Sal sees all Spydercos coming from the same place - workshops filled with craftsmen dedicated to quality and performance. Don't choose your knife based on the location stamped on the blade, because they all come from Earth.

It's a little known fact that a Spyderco Worker was one of the items carried by Voyager 2 which is now over 9 billion miles from our sun. NASA wanted an item that would bridge the gap between our most advanced technology, and a modern representation of our most primitive technology. Voyager 2 also carries a golden record with music, sounds and greeting from Earth. Spyderco engraved "Earth" on that Worker, and it became tradition for all Golden made Spydercos after that.

I wondered this very same thing when I handled my native for the first time. After a month of using it, I knew the answer. These things are "out of this world" so the marking is there to provide clarity to any in doubt of the true where bouts.

Exactly. They don't want people assuming that this is alien technology.

Or if an alien should ever find it, he could come looking to have a conversation with Sal.

An alien collaboration! I'd definitely be in for one (depending on the ergos. Who knows what kind of hand or claw they might have).

If this is true, it's pretty cool.

This is what Sal had to say on the matter when someone asked why their Golden-made Military was stamped with "Earth":

Golden is a bit far out and we didn't want to create any confusion?

It's sort of a trademark (I guess until someone copies it)?

It's really interesting that very few even notice it.

And in another thread posing the same question:

I will say that some don't like it, or understand it, but from a marketing point of view, it has come to have value.

The photo below from the 2010 Spyderco Product Guide, was included to commemorate Voyager 2 passing the orbit of Pluto, and the 33rd anniversary of that prototype Worker's launch into deep space.

Because some technician accidentally dropped it in during assembly.
