nice.... now go for hair splitting, or go to 10-15 a side on that kershaw and pop the hairs in half I can get that on the medium and the fine SM rods with out a strop. When I strop they are even sharper .

Another thing, I have been doing this for the past few days with good results. Make a plain Denim strop, it refines and brings particles to the edge and gets it that 5% sharper .

What do you mean by denim strop. Do you mean cut up my jacket from 1977 and use that? What did you use, is it on a piece of wood?

@Maa14: Congratulations on good results right off the bat. Bad luck about the 1K stone. I see you get the bad luck out of the way quick so now there is only good luck left. Sounds like the chosera stones do the trick. Keep it up and keep it on carpet.

here is a pic of the skyline:

and my 5th knife on the edge pro that I did today, a delica 4 ZDP this has a better polish than the skyline and i have never had the patience to sharpen ZDP on the sharpmaker so i tried on the EP and poof, stropped a few times and it is hair whittling and every now and then i can get it to split a hair but this is the best one so far! love the EP!

What grits choseras do you have? And that's awesome, I never had a mirror from stones before.

Somehow I never got around to buying those Choseras for the EP. You've got me looking at them again.

yup I have the 400, 1k, 3k, 5k, and 10k, but i broke the 1k last night after i had done three knives(dropped on floor ) but am going to get a new one, they are awesome. Also I did the zdp delica with the EP 220, EP 400, Chosera 400, Chosera 3k(notice the large skip), chosera 5k, then chosera 10k because i broke the 1k stone. i would like to have the 1k stone in there(helps with the polish a lot) but it still worked well. the choseras are awesome and they cut really fast. I love them!!!!

You are already getting great results which is also great. Glad to hear you like the EP. You will probably like it more and more as time goes on.

Have you started on the kitchen knives yet? How long will it take before you run out of knives in the house to sharpen? When I got my EP I was soon searching seldom used drawers in the kitchen, my tool room, etc. for knives I hadn't seen in years because every knife in the normal places had been put through the EP touch-up. One thing I realized was the EP was so much faster to get the knife sharp compared to my previous tools that it wasn't the tedious chore to go through the entire kitchen knife set.

The EP comes with a carrying case but I put it in a large zip-lock bag to keep it in good shape because I never use it. If the EP is kept on a 12"x12" base semi-permanently it is easy to sit anywhere (kitchen counter, coffee table, etc.) to use. Some have mentioned it's a bit bulky or awkward to use frequently due to time to set it up but if it is mounted to a base this isn't the case. I put a mirror on a piece of wood so I can use the EP suction cups. Or you can remove the suction cups and screw the EP to the wood. One day I'm going to get a piece of glass so I can put a picture under the glass that is pleasing to look at.

I just got the 5" ceramic Spyderco stones and mounted them on blanks to use with the EP and they really work great. I'm getting a sharp edge with the fine stone that really doesn't need stropping. But no matter how sharp I get an edge on stones the strop seems to get it just a little bit sharper. These stones were no big deal because of the low cost but now like Chuck, you have me thinking about the chosera stones. I know they aren't in my immediate future but when it's time to replace stones which is a long time from now the chosera's will be on the consideration list, at least the finer grits for the finishing stones.

Yes I really like it! And I just did 1 of the cheaper kitchen knives that we have and got it just as sharp as all the other knives I have sharpened. I don't know how many knives I "have" to sharpen left but so far I have sharpened 8 knives I think. All hair whittling. Also even though I have sharpened 12 knives through the 10 k stone none of them have needed to be flattened except the 220 EP stone(barely any)! And also when you get new stones you should defenantly have the choseras at the top of your consideration list!!

    Edit: changed 8 to 12

The coarser stones will wear faster than the fine grit. Once all the knives within reach are sharp you won't need the coarser stones very much except for different knives. You may want to watch how often you flatten the stones. In my experience they don't need to be completly perfect and flat to work well. Too much flattening just wears the stones away faster. When you notice they aren't cutting into the steel as well, then they need flattening. The center changes color over just a little time as you've noticed I'm sure. The center gets more wear especially on 4" and shorter blades because they are at least half belly (curved). Longer blade knives with straight edges will wear the entire width of the stone. Most stones shouldn't need to be flattened after 8 knives unless they were in real bad shape and needed lots of work IMO. You keeping your eye on that is good though. They will perform better when flat and free of old metal shavings.

How does that diamond flattener work? I think about getting one of those every once in a while. The way I'm doing it now is very messy and inconvenient.

Ok thanks! I knew that the coarser grit stones will wear faster and one of the knives that I did had a ton of work to do on it, I used the diamond plate for most of it but I was reprofileing to a really low angle (prob. 22-23°) but I used the 220 stone a lot also, this is the only reason I flattened it a little bit. I will also try to flatten as few times as I can, probably a long time until I Really need to flatten the stones. I love the EP!! And thanks for all of the helpful info! Any more?

O and also the "flattener" worked pretty good on the 220 stone. It also fits the EP for reprofileing, it cuts REALLY fast so I used it on a couple of the knives that I have done. It works well for heavy metal removal. It is 2 inches wide though IDK if it might be a problem on some knives but this is what the 120 grit EP stone is for, recurves, et the 1/2 inch stones

Does the flattener have a blank on it for the EP to hold just like the stones do?

I bought a coarse, fine and extra fine set of DMT diamond stones a couple of years ago. They are 2"x6" I glued them to some blanks I made out of thin wood. They worked but I thought they were too heavy and when I wanted to use very light pressure the weight would make that hard. Is the flattener stone about 1/4" thick? I'm thinking if I really needed to remove a lot of steel I wouldn't need to worry about light strokes so the weight wouldn't be a problem.
