Matriarch 2 EDC?

With respect, what is the point of the question? EDC means "every day carry." Is a Civilian a suitable EDC? Yes. I can carry it everyday, however can it handle a variety of cutting tasks? No. Maybe I am just carrying it everyday for it's intended usage. The Matriarch was originally designed as a women's self defense tool for a particular Spyderco distributor. A casual glance at the blade reveals it is NOT suited for a variety of cutting tasks. From tip strength to blade profile. If the tip breaks, and it was from an issue of materials or workmanship (note not design in this case) warranty will cover it. There are some companies that have a different warranty policy, however most make really thick fixed blades. In the end I think you will find the warning card in the box is the official Spyderco position on this issue.

Spyderco has stated that it IS and it ISN'T suitable for EDC. Thats why I'm asking for some clarification. You have obviously read the write-up for it. I guess you missed the part where Spyderco says the thicker tip makes it suitable for EDC....

I abhor the acronym "EDC" because almost any knife can complete your daily tasks but seldom does someone actually carry the same knife every single day.

Carry it, use it, don't be stupid. Same goes for a FFG Delica which actually has a THINNER tip.

If you run into something that looks like a challenge:

1.) Think about a solution that doesn't include speed and/or brute force
2.) Find a pair of scissors, shears, or a tool (or Spydie)that would be better for the job.
3.) Choose to not cut it.

If you break a tip it's almost certain the tool was being abused. It's a relative term and in the case of the Matriarch2 this threshold is lower than say a Gayle Bradley. Still, if you snap the tip off it was the user not the steel. Just buy another one and move on.

Not that every day carry implies anything but carrying something with you every day. If one wants to nitpick the verbiage.

I'm going to give the Matriarch 2 a try. None of the knives I own are carried every day but I hope to get a lot of use out of it.

I plan on using it to cut mostly vegetation and opening packages-snacks- it should hold up just fine.

It will be even safer if I buy a plane edge Dragonfly 2 to back it up

I'm a serious fan of having two tools on you. Even if you use your main (large) blade for 90% of the tasks it's nice to have a Ladybug, Dragonfly, or similar smaller knife on you. Even a Leatherman with some scissors.

There are just some things you don't want to tackle with your favorite folder. I think the Matriarch2 could do most of them, especially if you avoid putting as much pressure on the tip, but why not just tread lightly?

I think that even if you broke the tip (see image) that you would still have a very useful shape with a little grinder work to reshape it. I'm guessing that this would be the most fragile area and that's where I put the "break line" in the image.


This Dragonfly I bought broken, and with a little work it's still a useful blade.

Right now I EDC a zdp ladybug with an FFG. Talk about a thin tip! I still haven't broken it even though I've done some stupid stuff with it.

We apologize for the confusion, it was unintentional. We will no longer tag the Matriarch2 with the warning tag about its use. Should someone break the tip of the Matriarch2 it will be treated the same as any other model. The user will need to send it in to W&R for evaluation. We will evaluate each situation individually and do our best to be fair and proper.
