Matriarch 2 EDC?

So I've read that the Matriarch 2 has a thicker tip and is suitable for EDC use, but the knife came with a tag on it saying that it isn't suitable for EDC. Most write-ups for the blade and an email sent by Spyderco say it IS usable for EDC.

Anyone know whats up?

Why don`t you buy one, and try it, then report back? I personally wouldn`t use a knife like the matriach for edc. It is just too extreme. I`d carry it for it`s intendet purpose and carry a secondary blade for edc tasks.

Most my cutting needs involve opening food packaging and envelopes.

I do own it.....sometimes the best knife is the one you have on you.

I would rather see people break the tip on a blister pack than using it as intended . Use it lightly. If that works use it slightly harder. Keep it sharp so the blade does the work and not your triceps.

Cars aren't designed to be taken to the track but people do that all the time. Some people push boundaries and break stuff. They don't tow it back to the dealership and stamp their feet though.

The tip of the Matriarch II's blade is thicker than those on the original Matriarch, the brown Sprint Run Matriarch from 2010, and the Civilian. But it's still thinner and more acute than the tip of any other Spyderco model. I'll reserve mine for SD and emergency use as a "Rescue substitute" if necessary and with no expectation of the tip surviving unscathed and would recommend against using it as a general purpose EDC knife unless your EDC knife only sees light duty use.

I don't think this is a knife that can handel a lot of cutting tasks I use my edc knife for.

I'm still going to try find a deal on one though.

I like my endura handel to much not to try it with a totally different blade shape.

I think I could use one everyday and not break it unless I had to and that would be my fault.

It's probably just a generic tag. Frankly they should put it with ALL their defense knives just because.

The Matriarch2 as noted is pretty robust compared to some we have seen in the past. Likewise the Yojimbo2 looks a tank compared to the 1.0 version for EDC. Well, at least "tank-like".

I know what your trying to say, but if a car is under the factory warranty and the transmission breaks, they fix it.

Under normal wear and tear. Try ramming the transmission into 2nd at 100mph on the freeway and see what they say. Same goes to the engine.

IF you get it fixed it will be out of pity and a /facepalm'ing service department. Similar to snapping a tip of a Matriarch2 while trying to open a can of soup.

Couple shots, one of the Matriarch II's tip, the other comparing it to the tip of the 2010 Sprint Matriarch. Matriarch II is on the right. While the flat grind on the Sprint makes it look a lot thinner at the spine, note how much less difference there is at the very tips of the blades.

Great pic Paul. Even the FFG one should be quite a bit more stout than the Civi which is probably fine for most duties.

It's thin but not as thin as I thought. It should hold up to most of my edc knife tasks.

Looks a lot like my Tasman SE, I use the sh!t out of it at work without any problems. Just don't do anything crazy like pry or, twist the tip in something.

I think that it all depends on what you are using it for. I could carry it as a great second knife,
as SD, at teh office or times when I want a serrated edge, but I would probably push its limits
for EDC, especially when working at home around the farm.

Not sure I'd agree regarding the tips. To me, the Matrirarch 2's looks both thinner and more acute. In the second photo, the Matriarch 2 is on the right...

Not telling anyone what they should do, just trying to help them make an informed choice. Personally, I do feel that the thin and extremely acute tip, coupled with its angle relative to the handle, and the amount of leverage a long blade and handle provide, conspire to create a well above average risk of tip damage in everyday use. But, that's just one man's opinion. Am sure there's someone out there who's been using a Civilian to hack their way through the bush for the last ten years without incident.
