Thumbs up My Izula after I RIT dyed the micarta

I'm getting real tired of green canvas and foliage green and all this green camo stuff....so I decided to take the micarta scales off of my Izula and dye them. Last night I dyed them Cocoa brown with a box of RIT dye. After I washed them and let them dry I roughed them up a bit with some 180 grit sand paper. This is how they look now. I love the nice brown color.

In the past I have also successfully RIT dyed a white Spyderco and made it purple. Stuff works great.

Hey Tony, I'm not sure. I know with FRN that it doesn't go that deep as if you take a knife and "whittle" a little slice off the dyed FRN you can see the old color. However, it's not like paint in that I have not been able to wear off any dye ever off of any knife handle I've dyed. I would bet it goes like 1mm into the handle material. It may go deeper with micarta since it freaking absorbs everything way more than something like G10.

what are your results with G10?

    great combo of colour there.

    cheers,

Not sure, I've never done G10. Thanks for the compliment.

I'm curious now, if anyone has a piece of G10 or micarta that they can dye and then cut in half please do it and let us know.

I've got a set of light tan canvas micarta Mule scales downstairs I will experiment with. Was working on them last week and had them down to the stage of final shaping and sanding - and I accidentally knocked a big old chip out of them while on my workbench.

I'll get a package of RIT this week and see how they take up the color - I'm thinking about trying Tangerine orange to see if I can replicate a Hunter Orange color of orange G10. We'll see how it goes, and I'll post before/after photos.

Here is what the scales look like cut 2/3 of the way through and then broken the rest of the way. I did it on purpose to see if it would show the dye any differently.

I ended up not liking how the dye looked after a few days and also wished the scales covered the back part of the knife (including the hole). I don't like how the scales only covered the front of the handle....so I cut and broke them.

Doesn't look like the dye goes in hardly at all.

FYI, the scales are sitting on a beige file cabinet just so you don't think the white balance is off.
