I hate to be a noob, but what is a strop? Is it something you do after sharpening?

Strops are used for a finishing step in sharpening. A strop is a piece of leather (usually) glued to a piece of wood and treated with a very low grit abrasive like diamond paste. Some aren't glued to wood and I'm sure you've seen barbers use a strop that hangs from a hook on the wall. They touch up their straight razors with it to be sure it is sharp when go to cutting and carving around their customer's juggler vein. LOL I hope. It will really put a nice razor edge on a knife that is already very sharp.

Feel free to ask any question here you need to. I've learned much more about sharpening from people on this forum than I have any other info I've found on the net or in books.

That's interesting. I've been wondering about lower grit diamond paste as opposed to using my 1000-2000 grit stones to touch up an edge.

I may be wrong but maybe since the strops are soft and stones are hard that has a big effect on the results they produce. Therefore the grits or microns may need to be measured differently. Like EP water stones compared to Japanese water stones. I think a 1000 grit EP stone is similar to sharpening with a Japanese water stone of 6000 or 8000 grit. As I said I may be wrong.

    Very cool .

As a side-note, sorry to play hall monitor but this thread is totally designated as off topic. The only Spyderco reference was Rob adding a picture of a Military.
