some questions on the edge pro..

So I was set on purchasing the Wicked Edge set until I read that some people have been waiting since June for theirs. I don't have the patience to wait that long and went on to find something else that would work for me and found the edge pro.

Now can any one give it to me strait, how easy or difficult is it to use the system? I'm a person who has never sharpened a knife in my life.

How long does the stones and tapes last? Do I need to have spares on hand?

I saw some videos and photos online and notice that different grits would wear out at different rates. The problem I see is that thickness would vary every time I change stones, so there will be variances in the angle. What are your thoughts on this? is there like a trick or do I have to reset the angle for every stone?

For your first time sharpening, I would practice on a cheap gas station knife. I ruined the first knife I tried on the EP.

Yes, some stones wear faster than others. You can paint.the edge with a sharpe inbetween stones to check the right angle.

The stones will last a good amount of time. You can flatten them out. It shows how to do it on the DVD you got with the system. The tapes will last for about 5 sharpening. Maybe more if you don't nick them.

This post WILL be brief. I have ALL the answers to the questions you asked. You made some excellent points that need to be dealt with to get the best performance out of an EP. The good news is the EP WILL give you outstanding performance. Don't worry about stones wearing out. Mine have worn at different amounts mainly because of use. I use the 320 grit more thatn the others. Coarser grits for reprofiling, finer for polishing. The 320 is perfect for an all-purpose stone. It'll give you a hair popping edge. I've also found another stone from Congress Tools that I love to use on my EP. I said this post would be brief so I'll stop here. If you want more info I have lots. Not all of course but between me, others on the forum and Ben Dale you will be covered. Ben Dale is the inventor so maybe he knows a thing or 10.

Just buy one. If money is a concern, get the smallest set for about $160. It comes with two stones. You can get the others later. By then you'll be very skilled with the tool and ready to re-profile and polish your edges. As others may have noticed, I can talk about this sharpener for pages but this is all for now. In case I forgot to tell you, just buy one. You won't be sorry. There are very few products I'm this sure of but this is one.

    Jack
PS edit: One thing about the smaller set. You can get the other stuff that comes with it if you buy the larger set for about $230. I did that and now have things I don't use. I don't care much for the tapes for example. Some like them. Reasons later.

Just did. A little anyway. I'm going to keep checking them out and trying their stones but I have everything I need right now.

The stones I've used so far are the 320, 400 and 600 grit moldmaster stones.

    oh okay!

I was thinking if I should just jump on the chosera stone with this kit. Seems like a good set to start with and maybe just add a 120 grip EP stone.

I have been drooling over that chosera kit for a long time. The full set of choseras also dispense with the polish tapes.

Wow. That looks like a great set but quite a bit more expensive. I don't know anything about the chosera stones so won't comment. I have wondered about them though.

Also, I'd suggest dealing directly with Ben at edgeproinc.com. His price is $5 or $10 more expensive for his sets than some of the resellers but I prefer Ben getting the money since the price is about the same. Plus, he is great to deal with. That's why I want him to make the profit since I'm sure he sells to the re-sellers at a discount. He came up with the thing after all. That's just my opinion of course. You may have reasons for dealing with a particular re-seller. I've looked at chefstogo for stropping stuff. Nice site. For now though I've made my own with wood and leather I bought and treated with DMT diamond paste.

I have the moldmaster 320,400,600 stones. I use water/dishsoap. There bad azz! Worth the money.(like there expensive)

To the OP. I would get the set with the 220,320 stones. Also get the 120 stone. When the stones wear out,buy the Congress stones.

Also, look into a strop. You can buy one. Jack says he has a great one he got for like 20 bucks. Or you can make your own with a piece of wood, an old leather belt, and some sort of polishing compound.

    good luck

I've been using water. Then I wondered about that so I called Congress. He (Mark I think) said all their stones are meant to be used with oil. I'll stop using those stones if that's the case. It's just too messy, especially since the EP has the stone on top of the blade. Oil would be dripping all over. Not for me. I was perfectly happy with the EP stones and would continue with them before using oil. I'll continue using water because for the two weeks I used them before calling them they worked great and have worked great since. The polished bevel is MUCH better than the EP stones leave. EP has a 1200 grit stone now that isn't on the web site. You have to call to get one if you want it. I haven't gotten it. Every time I see something new I think "How sharp to these things need to be?" Then I answer my own question. "Sharper."

Yep, SiC stones are meant to be used with oil but I'm using our version of windex on my SiC double sided bench stone here and it seems to work fine.

The strop 357 is talking about came from knivesplus.com. I think it's the only one they sell. It's different. All you ever have to do to it to re-charge it is add a few drops of olive oil and rub it in with your fingertips. It is a great all-purpose strop. It is a piece of sheep skin I think glued to a piece of wood. I don't know if it does as good as the ones I have now because I gave it to my son when he bought a few Spydercos. But, If someone spends the kids college money on an EP or something I'd definately suggest the knivesplus strop (if they still have it).

Ok, strops now? I have two sets. One is cow hide (soft) and the other is horse hide (harder). The soft leather works great for convex edges and edges with multiple bevel angles because it wraps around curved edges better. The horse hide being harder will put a very keen edge on the knife. I use the cow for polishing the bevel and the horse to "keen up" the edge for sharpness. Just use a very little pressure. Even a strop will put a burr on an edge so small you can't see it but your knife won't cut well. I've been looking at the balsa wood strop on chefstogo that goes with the magnetic system they have. I also put some diamond paste on wood for a strop. I don't think I like that as much. Maybe not enough practice though. DMT recommends using their paste on hard wood. It is good stuff. I had a set of chisels I was about to throw out but the paste got them RAZOR sharp and saved me from buying a new set. Go DMT. Another great company and product. Another story.

If I sounded like I think I know everything I didn't mean to. I don't. In fact, every time I think I'm pretty smart I prove myself stupid. I don't even have to try.

Has anyone used any stones from Congress tools for heavy reprofiling or on very damaged edges? I'm thinking of something to replace the EP 120 and 220 stones. I have no problem with them at all, they do great for me but at Congress Tools' prices I'd hate to pass up really coarse stones from them. Also, I think their shipping is a little high because stone orders can get heavy so I'd like to put as many stones on one order as I need instead of spreading what I want over multiple orders and multiple shipping charges.

I think arjay order some and am looking forward to his opinion but has anyone already used any?

I didn't damage any edge but I reprofiled the edge on my buck vanguard to 15 degree ( was 25) with the 320 Congress stone with no problem. I think it is faster than the 120 EP stone.

My moldmasters are on the way and I picked up 150, 240, 320, 400, and 600 grit. If the 320 cuts faster than the EP 120, I'm interested in finding out how fast the 150 and 240 eat steel.
