Civilian vs police g10 vs military?

I am stuck choosing between the g10 police, civilian, and military. i want a large folding tactical knife, and cant seem to choose. Huge points to the police and civilian for the lock back and tip up carry(i use the clip tie mod, making them WAY faster than other knives.) also points for the military for being very customizable with all the different colors. So i would appreciate any insight in helping me choose. thanks

I just did this choice myself,
I ended up with the Police 3 G10 myself, my reasoning was quite simple.

I wanted a big knife (my previous biggest was the navaja).
    I wanted spydie edge.
    I wanted to retain utility.

The military is the most 'Utility friendly" of the 3, but not lockback and serrated was not available.
The Civilian was the most bad-assed looking, but was useless for utility purposes.
The police met all my criteria.

I do not regret it... its a cutting machine, quite large, and very solid, whilst remaining slim and managable. With spydie edge it looks wicked. Excellent build quality!

Also if you compare length , the police is bigger than the Civilian.

What is the purpose of the knife? Civilian is a much less flexible knife that does a couple specific tasks really well, but isn't that great beyond those couple things. Millie is a great larger knife that is very versatile and, as you noted, is available in many different combinations. I don't have any experience with the Police, but assume it is also a very versatile knife that would handle almost every task you could throw at it.

If you have any concern for legalities, the Military is 4" blade, where the other two are >4". I won't get into detail, however I can say from experience the Military makes for an outstanding sd knife.

well as a last ditch tactical knife the civilian would be the way to go. Just hope you don't plan on filleting any fish or skinning any animals. Dismembering something your all set. I assume you would be carrying something more utilitarian as a last ditch work/survival knife.

The major differences between the civilian and the police revolve around legalities and being paid by the people rather than the government. Oh...the knives.

Totally different tools. One is a "self-defense only" piece designed as a firearm backup. One is a very large traditional lockback. What is the goal, a defense folder?

The Civi isn't for the faint of heart and I have to think whoever is facing one down had better be a sociopath to avoid screaming and running the other direction. The Police is something to behold as well. Points for the Civi as a overall slasher; the police for piercing.

Do some research regarding your legalities and purpose. Then go with the knife you like the style of the most.

Last ditch knife for self-defense? I would think that WITH TRAINING there are a variety of Spyderco's specifically designed for MBC. The Chinook, Street Beat, waved Endura, and the Ayoob come to mind. There would be nothing wrong with the Police either. The Civilian is designed with those in mind who have NOT had formal MBC training. I think the choice is clear.

Yojimbo 2 coming out soon as well /drool.

The Civilian was designed as a weapon retention/backup tool. While I wouldn't say cops in general are trained at bladecraft (thus an excellent model) people with training and a 4"+ long reverse S can do damage too.

or, you could buy all three and when you need a specific knife for a specific task, you could then grab the specific one.

All three are excellent knives. But not knowing much about your priorities, your SD skill level, your knowledge of the law, and your physical conditioning, it's difficult to provide any useful and responsible recommendation.

If you don't have the proper training and mental+physical conditioning, then forget about using a knife for SD.

If you do choose the Civilian then I concur with the article cited by Blerv, and recommend getting Keating's video on the Civilian. At the very least it's a start and may prevent you from hurting yourself. Then train.

Military. I also had concerns about the tip down and held off for a long time. Now I feel stupid for waiting. The best, period.
