If the clip is part of the scale it is an economy.
We would rather be the knife in your pocket, because is "works" better, than the knife in your showcase, because it "looks" better.

Exactly. The Economy was the only model ever to use that style clip. So, if the clip side looks like the middle knife in this picture, it's definitely an Economy, which was the original version of the Standard, and would have been made in the mid 80's.

When did the Economy change it's name to Standard? With the clip change?

Not exactly. The Economy was originally called the Standard. However, when the upgraded version with the three screw clip was introduced it became the Standard and the original version with the punched out clip was relabeled the Economy.

i am convinced this is an economy. it matches up with everthing that was said exept that instead of saying seki city japan it just says seki-city. does this matter? also im guessing its not worth anything.

Na, it is still worth a bit. If in good shape probably $30-$50.

    Pics would help

go to your local auto shop or hardware store and get some metal polish and a buffing wheel that can fit on a drill or grinder, you can still use the polish without the wheel, use it on the blade (AWAY FROM EDGE) and on the handle and it will take away the scuffs and surface patina and make it shiny. put oil on the pivot, only a drop a side, or it will attract dirt, and put oil on the rust and it will stop it spreading.
Im guessing if you sent it to spyderco in colorado, theyd clean it up for a small fee.

Flitz should work. Spyderco charges $20 for a refresh, I think.
