Any person, man or woman has as good a chance at being good or bad at any one thing I suppose. I do however know a bunch of men that buy the hugest SUV's thay can find for their wife to drive so when she crashes it won't be her car getting crushed, having it's interior spaces invaded by the other vehicle.

Pretty scary if they really are that bad at driving eh? The biggest road hazards behind the wheels of the largest battering rams!

The truth of the matter is these vehicles are more difficult to drive safely, despite seeming ease of control with power everything. The way people drive around here I'd likely have several accidents under my belt from the extra stopping distances involved with these vehicles if I drove an SUV or truck with the number of people pulling out in front of me, panic stopping, etc.

Roll overs happen more often too with these SUV's last I saw statistics.

Not to say they're wrong, but I think the Daily Mail is closer to the National Enquirer than to the New York Times or even USA Today.

In my opinion, the Daily Mail is a fairly right-wing paper that likes to publish sensationalist/emotive stories that sell papers but are frequently proven to be wrong or just badly researched ... I'm guessing that there is a lot to this story that they haven't told us - they just decided what they wanted it to sound like and bent the facts to fit.

In my experience it is impossible to predict how individuals will drive because there are good and bad in both sexes. When drivers are bad though the trend tends to be that men (especially young men) drive over-aggressively, with ill-placed confidence in their abilities; while women tend to drive inattentively and timidly and can lack car-control finesse. But one of the worst drivers I know is a guy who drives slowly and inattentively and some of the best drivers I have met are women ... so go figure

Dunno about that ... I've never seen a guy put on make-up or turn around and talk to children on the back seat while driving But cigs are probably 50/50 and talking on the mobile is 90% the preserve of men who drive white vans or sales reps

True. They talk on the CB, drink coffee, eat a bagel, shave, scratch themselves, and smoke a cigs while driving. Heck, I use to roll cigarettes while zipping down the Thruway.

Seriously, a few of the best drivers I've ever ridden with were women and I've ridden with a number of men who I'd never ride with a second time. I also worked for a while for a cab company, both as a driver and dispatcher. Two of our three best drivers (in terms of accident/mileage ratio) were women.

In my experience, the worst drivers, regardless of sex, can be found in vehicles with NJ plates.

I sold my motorcycle because one day while tooling along on a beautiful little country road, a woman overtook me in an Excursion, talking on a cell phone, with a big pile of kids in her car. I got out of her way as soon as possible. I was more scared for my own safety then than at any other time since I abandoned a wayward youth. If women do cause more accidents, I think part of the explanation is likely the "kids-on-board" factor--both the fact of the distractions, and the times of day traveling. The pre rush hour period could be more dangerous than rush hour, when cars are moving more slowly.
The study doesn't control for this "time of drive" issue. It may well be that men commute further than women and drive more often because of the commute issue--while women do more driving in town where accidents have more opportunity to occur.

Just from what I've seen, men are worse drivers in terms of grossly excessive speed, weaving, and tailgating.

I think that stereotypes about driving usually revolve around races, not genders. However, I believe the degree of distraction is generally higher the more talkative someone is...

see, right there i would have driven behind her to make sure she stayed safe, as long as long as she looked like Daisy Duke.

getting back to the subject, here are my observations. it amazes me how many idiots out there don't know what to do when a big red truck with flashing lights, a loud siren and even louder air horn are behind them. some men seem to try to beat us to get out of our way. wrong answer! eventually when the cars in front of them do the right thing and pull over and they can't get by, they will pull over too. women are usually on the phone and have a deer in headlights look in their eyes when they finally see us, like where did you come from.

Something ya'll don't appear to have pointed out is this:

Study says women are worse drivers, get in more car crashes despite driving less than men

    This premise is nonsensical.

Most women are worse drivers BECAUSE they drive less than men.

Years of driving, especially as part of a profession will teach you dramatically more about driving than going to the mall twice a week, grocery store twice a week, dropping kids off at school and even driving them to extracurricular activities daily. Why? because a> it's probably less miles b> you aren't typically driving in different areas or parts of town each time you make a drive and c> you are typically focused on making it to the store school activity etc instead of what you should be doing which is paying attention to the people cars and things around you.

Women are typically trained to have almost no situational awareness and men are assumed to be responsible for most if not all of it. Change that and women will be highly competitive with men.

My woman has driven at multiple places as a delivery driver as well as commuting to a full time position over most of her adult life. She is an excellent driver. So am I and my years of delivery experience and my life as an amateur adventurer pay off in that area as well.

it's not what's in your pants, it's how much driving you have done.

and I have a message for all you grown-ups who are starting to have families: If. You. Can't. Drive. A. Car. Before. You. Breed. Please. Seek. The. Guidance. Of. A. Professional.

(I mean like a driving instructor - procreation is *NOT* a driving skill (that is to say, it doesn't make you a *better* driver). It's not even a life skill if you are not purposely doing it to create the best progeny possible.)

I think that similar rules should apply to gun owners. Making babies does not make you a firearms safety expert. Making babies doesn't even make you a competent parent. It just makes you a parent.

okay, rant over, I just thought I needed to clarify this.
