    Removing Emerson opener from Delica

    Hello,
I may be removing the Emerson opening hook from a Delica soon. I am looking for any advice on ways to do this. I have a Dremel and quite a few cutting, grinding accessories and can get others I don't have. I think I will want to remove the hook and leave the spine curving around the hole to the top of the hole. The result will be a Delica with a narrower blade. I'll want it to look nice so polishing will be involved after getting the new shape smooth.

    Thanks,
    Jack

I think, considering the hassle and loss of value in the knife, I'd just buy a new Delica in whichever configuration you want and sell the Wave

Yup, you would probably be ahead by Ebaying the wave and turning it around for another Delica.

But, if you're like me and just want to mess with stuff, I'd start by cutting off a bit at a time and don't get in too big a hurry. You can always take more off.

If you have access to a belt sander, that would probably help also making it more uniform getting the final shape.

    Jack,

Use a carbide cut off wheel and carefully cut the hook off, but cut it leaving enough metal left around/in front of the hole for grinding it smooth (don't cut it off flush where you want it because you'll want to grind it smooth, if you did that would leave the front side of the "loop" thinner than the back). Once cut, grind it down to almost where you want it, and gradually go down in grit until you get it nice and smooth. Use a finer grit sanding barrel to get your final shape, then polish as desired. The hardest part is keeping your grinding squared up with the rest of the spine. Be sure to keep some ice water handy in case you get the blade too hot.

Do what David^ said, the only thing i could add is mark it with a sharpie and tape the rest of the knife up well, to protect yourself in case you slip and to protect the blade if the dremel gets away from you. you can do a quick search on here and find a few pics of some of the other members who have done the same thing.

I would send it to a knife guy like Southard and have him grind it off. Then you can do a FFG treatment too or go with a swedge and make it more of a spear point.

I personally love the wave blade shape over the standard Delica and totally understand why you would want to do this. I've thought the same thing.
