    Combo Edge?

Does anyone out there prefer a combo edge? I have full plain blade and full serrated and they both have there purposes. Is there any advantage to a combo edge? The reason i'm asking is that there are a few delica/enduras I want that just come with a combo edge.

I only like combo edges on certain knifes, like the stretch and endura. I don't like the combo edge on shorter blades just because it makes it a little harder for me to sharpen.
I would rather have either plain or full serrations but there are some blades that i will get the combo on just because i like the knife or i want it for my collection.
Just get whichever ones you like and if it does not suit your needs you can always sell them and recoup your money.

I rather carry two knives. I carry my delica PE and my harpy just about everyday. That's my combo edge.

I don't have a use for a combo edge. IMO, it only works with long blades, and a 50/50 (theoretically, at least). Otherwise, you have a short run of plain edge that you can't use the "meat" of the blade and a short run of serrations that you can't get the sawing motion going very well.

I feel the same way about these two knives.. but they are both great either plain or full set of teeth as well.

Huge fan of CE's. Find that in my day to day they are the most reasonable compromise. Aggree with GN35 above that they work much better on longer blades, Millie, Stretch, Endura.

When you can't carry two this is the a good option. My Delica 4 CE's end up being pretty usefull. I am by no means an expert at sharpening but I don't have much issue keeping my CE's sharp, a little extra effort and care is all it takes.

I used to like combo edges but not any more. Now I much prefer a plain edge.

CE is definitely nice to have in certain situations, but one of the major downside is you can't sell the darn thing, PE sells a lot faster.

I prefer either a plain edge or a fully serrated edge. I just never really warmed up to combo edges. i used to use them on cheapo knives before I was a Spydie-a-holic and I there wasn't enough edge to work with.

I love CE knives. I love my CE D4 and CE E4.

I really wish they didn't have to phase out the CE.

I'll only go CE if it's the only option like the Goddard knives. That's a personal preference though...my Dad adores them.

Another one who likes CE blades here. It took only a tiny Ladybug in CE to convince me.
However, I am comfortable with PE and SE edges too. Eventually it all depends on the knife itself.

I have a couple of CE but I always reach for the PE knives - they are just more useful for everyday task. I don't like the way that CE blocks you from choking-up on something and using the base of the blade for a careful/subtle task. If I had the need for serrations (for rope etc.) I'd keep a proper SE blade in my pocket

I just feel like in order to have both you end up sacrificing the best aspects of both types of edges. You don't have much PE left and you don't have enough SE to be as effective as you could with full SE.

For me CEs are not for me. I never have a need for a SE either. They are nice sometimes of course but I've never been in a situation where the PE wouldn't do a job that only a SE could. If I had a need for a SE I'd want the entire blade serrated. I've always thought the combo edge was more of a sales gimick than a well thought out improvement in a knife edge. I may be very wrong about the gimmick part. This is my way of thinking based on my knife needs.

+1 on the discontinuing of CE's. I understand the business decision, if they don't sell, Spyderco shouldn't be making them.

I would expect that some knives will continue to have them "Manix 2, Millie, D4, E4" so people who like them will have to make do.

I prefer a PE, but in a pinch I’d purchase a Spyderco CE over another manufacturers PE in a heartbeat. I gave my daughter’s fiancé a Delica 4 with a CE last year because he needed an EDC and I was willing to accommodate him. Lately, I’ve been thinking I’d like to have a CE in my collection; this gives me a legitimate reason to purchase one if I find a model that I really want. I’ve never been SE guy either; I’ve never really had the need for one.

I am another who prefers to have one PE and one SE - in my case, usually a Manix2 PE (usually the CTS-XHP now) and a Spyderhawk Salt SE - best of both worlds IMO. That said, I can see CE being somewhat useful on larger knives, or perhaps even something like a Ladybug where you use the tip for opening boxes and the serrations for cutting twine or similar. I think the mostly serrated but plain tip of some of the rescue/assist type blades to be plausible as well.
