    flashlight question..

can somebody explain to me the ANSI lumen? how do ANSI lumens compare to OTF lumens? thanks in advance
it all started november 2010.. now Im up to 16's and 2 BYRD's and still, theres many more to come. thanks sal HUGE thanks to my dad for my newly accuired Orange manix 2!

Some companies rate lights based on emitter potential... some on an ANSI (American National Standards Institute) rated scale.

I quote this from another forum:

"""ANSI will be lower. OTF is usual measured when the light is turned on, ANSI is measured after 3 minutes, how much the brightness drops will depend on the construction of the light, i.e. how good the cooling of the led is.
Some people on cpf does measure brightness at both turnon and after 3 minutes, there you can see how much different lights drops in output. """"

ANSI lumens refer to projector ( movie ) OTF are out the front lumens in a flashlight. They measure lumens that way because the bare led has a higher output than the same led in a flashlight.

Depends on the light. Just go with OTF lumens and not emitter lumens and you will be fine.

i was wondering because i recently got a quark mini123 and there is an "S2" edition that was 10 more but the lumens were lower, but they were ansi lumens/ so why was this light more?

I'm assuming your Quark Mini123 is an R5 edition like my Quark AA.. Here is a quote from CPF that explains these emitters nicely:

The R5/S2 designations denote the different brightness bins of the emitters used. The S2 is a brighter bin than the R5 by about 7%. There's no R6 nor an S1 bin so the S2 is the next step up in brightness from R5. Your eyes can't make out a difference in brightness when it is that little, so, essentially, they're about the same brightness.

I also think it has to be measured with the batteries that ship with the light which heavily penalize lights shipping with alkaline batteries. Alkalines do not perform well under high current draw.

ANSI lumens will also penalize smaller lights more than larger ones when it comes to brightness since a small light gets hotter faster and the led will be less efficient at higher temperatures.

As long as everyone is measuring it the same way all is good imho.
