What to get an US Army reservist getting called up to Afganistan?

One of my friends who is in an US Army MP unit got called up and I just found out he has less than 2 weeks before leaving for a little training refreshment before heading to Afghanistan. He is sorta into knives...well in the fact he carries a cheap one and knows what a spyderco is but has never owned one.

Since I had short notice I just picked 2 from my personal stash and gave them to him; I gave him a new condition OIF native and a Manix 2 PE. I thought having a SE and a PE would be a good idea. The Manix for heavy chopping and such and the serrated for rope. In his exact words, he said the OIF was "sick" which meant badass, cool.

I hope he puts them to good use...I will surely miss the OIF

Good for you...i'm sure both will serve him well. I would've probably voted for a Military though...i mean, seems fitting doesn't it?

    Good On Ya, Bro --

My other choices for him would be any Chinook (...of course...)
    ...and an H1 Warrior.

God Bless him -- hoping for him Missions Success and Safe Return.

Good choices. The Manix is a great choice. I understand that H-1 is great in the conditions because of heat/sand/sweat issues. If you can still get black, serrated aqua salts that may be a good choice.

Honestly, since you seem to have the utility cutting taken care of, I would suggest getting him a Benchmade 7-Hook. Extremely useful for safely cutting off clothing on injured soldiers or marines.

He's probably already got one. My unit had them issued out before we left for Iraq.

I also think H1 would be a good choice. The aqua salt line would be pretty high value, and as long as he can sharpen serrations I think that would serve him quite well.... On another note, how about a sharpmaker?

This is what I got my buddy who's in Baghram right now.

Louderback was stunned, to say the least. He also got the kydex sheath with Teklocks, so he can run it daily without tearing up the presentation sheath.

    Job 19:29 states
Be ye afraid of the sword: For wrath bringeth the punishments of the sword, That ye may know there is a judgment.

    Take care over there Louderback.

He's getting a VTAC sling for his rifle when he gets back, since he was issued a 3 point sling (and good luck doing support side transitions with that thing) on a M16A4.
