Who else is a ham radio operator?

    73,

    W5DAJ

The story of my call that doesn't match my initials at all. My favorite uncle was a radio operator in the Navy in WW2. After the war he got his ham license and for as long as I can recall he was W5DAJ. He is SK now and I was able to get his call. I will keep it all my life and hopefully pass it to a grandchild some day.

Me, though my callsign doesn't have any story behind it. Just the one that was assigned when I passed the Technician test a few years ago. Thought about switching it in for a vanity one with my initials, but I'm kind of used to it now.
Newest in hand: Drop Point UKPK PE, Leaf UKPK SE.

I'm surprised there's only one other ham here. I'd have thought quite a few. Interesting.

Personally, I am not a ham. My boss on the other hand is quite active.

Just helped him sell a Kenwood model TS-940S.(I think I got that right)

I picked up a general-class license a while ago, but never actually got around to using it.

Maybe one of these days when I've got the spare cash to sink into a new hobby.

You can get started very inexpensively on the VHF/UHF bands. You have limited range with them but if you are in range of a local repeater you can get up to maybe a 50 mile radius and at times some farther. That could be done for less than a hundred dollars with used equipment and a little luck. From there it spans to how much do you want to spend. With the right settings and extras that same equipment can talk globally with IRLP, D-STAR and a couple other systems available. It can be hugely expensive but it doesn't have to be.

Yes, you got it right. That's a good radio. He must have upgraded if he got rid of that one.

He had quite a collection and is looking to down size.

He recently bought a Yaesu(dont know model) and is looking to recoup the funds from that purchase by selling off a few non users.

Hams have the same problem as knife guys. They like to accumulate radios and unlike knives the radios take up a good bit of room. They are also harder to pass as 'that old thing?'.
