    154CM compared to S30V?

I was wondering how 154CM is compared to S30V. Mainly cause I was thinking about picking up a Manix 2 for $70 and the only steel I've had experience in is S30V with the Milie and Para 2.

    Thanks in advance.

I would say maybe tiny step down from S30V overall. 154Cm is pretty identical to something like VG-10. It takes a super sharp edge and very easy to sharpen.

Like Kawr said, it's similar to VG-10. Although in my experiance VG-10 holds an edge slightly better. I actually would probably take 154cm over S30V as I sometimes have troubles trying to get the edge I want with S30V as it's harder to sharpen. 154CM is a good working knife steel, certainly not crap by any means.

With a good heat treat, 154 is much better than most think!
I prefer it over most S30v.

    Just my opinion.........

    More S90v & CF please.......

S30v is quite a bit more abrasion resistant than 154cm/vg10 from my reprofiling experience.

I ment that it has properties that are similar to VG-10, such as edge retention and ease of sharpening. ATS34 could be similar that way too, I've never owned a knife with that steel so have no personal experiance with it.

For me, it depends who made it. As in, more importantly the heat treat.

    More S90v & CF please.......

Don't worry about it. Spyderco doesn't use junk steel in any of their knives. 154CM is very popular outside of Spyderco, and is considered the "premium steel" in some product lines, such as Leatherman.

    Emerson uses 154CM exclusively.

I get the impression S30V is finniky about heat treat. A good batch is a good batch. For me 154CM in the Manix2 holds up extremely well.

Kind of funny, have been playing with the Urban and Balance all day. Pick up the Manix and it feels like a very sharp bulldozer

I haven't used 154CM, but if it's as close to VG-10 as they say it is, then S30V is noticeably better. VG-10 is still one of my favorites, though.

From what I've seen, 154CM is pretty darn stain resistant and it's slightly softer than VG-10 or S30V.
